Assistant Professor in General Legal Theory
The Department of Law is one of the larger departments at Stockholm University.
The department has around 150 employees and 5,500 students. More than 70 teachers are fully engaged in teaching and conducting the research that underpins the education. About thirty professors with various legal science orientations are present at the department, creating a dynamic environment with top-class research and a strong international profile.

General Legal Theory
Job Responsibilities
The job responsibilities include teaching, research, and administration as well as contacts with the surrounding community. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, and other interactive course components, examinations, course responsibility, course administration, supervision, and development and updating of teaching materials.
The position concerns research in the field of general legal theory. Teaching will primarily take place in general legal theory, but significant teaching in other subjects may also be included.
The job responsibilities also include applying for external research funding and keeping up with developments in the subject area and the societal developments that are relevant to the work at the university.
The position is full-time and lasts for four years. The main part of the position concerns research in the field of general legal theory. The teaching part comprises 49% of the annual working time.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible for appointment as an assistant professor is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree in law or has equivalent scientific competence. Preference should be given to those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent scientific competence no more than seven years before the application deadline.
A requirement for the position is good knowledge of both Swedish and English, and the person offered the position must be able to teach in both languages.
As a general eligibility requirement, the applicant must have both the ability to collaborate and the skills and suitability needed to perform the job responsibilities.
Assessment Criteria
Particular and equal weight is given to scientific and pedagogical skills. Administrative ability and the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community are also valued. Other skills and experiences that are relevant to the position and the job responsibilities are also considered as merits.
In assessing scientific skills, the scientific quality of the research is primarily considered. The scope of the research, especially in terms of depth and breadth, is also significant. Since teaching is expected to occur in subjects other than general legal theory, research experience from other subjects may also be advantageous. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and doctoral education, as well as the ability to obtain funding for research competitively, is taken into account. The ability to interact both within the scientific community and with the surrounding society is also valued.
In assessing pedagogical skills, the pedagogical quality is primarily considered. Previous teaching experience is also significant. Special emphasis is placed on experience in teaching general legal theory, but teaching in other subjects is also meritorious. Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching, as well as the ability to connect teaching to research, is taken into account. The ability to interact on higher education pedagogical issues with stakeholders inside and outside the university is also part of pedagogical skills.
Administrative skills and experience, as well as other skills and experiences relevant to the position and the job responsibilities, are also counted as merits. Such skills can be demonstrated, for example, through the ability to conduct overarching operational planning, skills in leading operations and personnel, and through the ability to collaborate. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work is also a merit.

Information on Promotion to University Lecturer
An appointment as an assistant professor is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) (HF). The purpose of the appointment is to give the assistant professor the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to gain qualifications for another teaching position. An assistant professor at Stockholm University shall, after application, be promoted to a permanent position as a university lecturer if they have the qualifications for such promotion according to HF and the Employment Ordinance for appointments to teachers at Stockholm University (AOSU) and are also deemed suitable according to the criteria below.
Eligibility Requirements for Promotion to University Lecturer
Applicants must have documented ability to independently initiate and conduct research of high scientific quality. Pedagogical skills at the lecturer level must be demonstrated through teaching at both the undergraduate and advanced levels and be well documented.
Applicants must have completed higher education pedagogical training of at least 7.5 higher education credits or have been assessed by the faculty board to have equivalent knowledge.
