Job Advertisement: Radar Signature Developer

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defence and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analyses. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.

Are you interested in using your strong technical skills to develop new technology that strengthens Sweden's defense and security? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!

About the Position

We are looking for someone who wants to contribute to the development and analysis of future materials for radar signature adaptation.

A radar signature describes how an object is perceived by a radar system. Within the defense sector, there is a significant need to conceal or adapt the signatures of military vehicles, aircraft, and ships. A central part of this work is to identify, develop, and optimize materials with specifically tailored properties.

At FOI, you will work with modeling, calculations, production of signature materials and structures, measurements, and analysis of measurement data. This may include developing your own software for calculations and data analysis, as well as working with established software tools. In the laboratory environment, 3D printers, extruders, and ball mills are used to produce material samples for analysis. Your tasks will also include identifying relevant technical questions, documenting and reporting results to clients, and, in some cases, participating in scientific publishing.

Through work in several research projects, you will have the opportunity to develop professionally and engage with cutting-edge technology. At FOI, there are also good opportunities to influence and further develop your role over time, which may eventually involve responsibilities in project management and closer collaboration with our clients.

About the Unit

You will be part of the Radar Signatures unit, which belongs to the Electronic Warfare department in Linköping. Our mission is to support Sweden's defense by assessing the utility of various technologies, methods, and products in the field of radar signatures.

Do you have the competence profile we need?

Requirements

  • Master's degree in engineering or a related field with a focus on material physics, materials science, chemistry, or an area that FOI deems equivalent.
  • Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish and English.

We place great importance on your personal qualities. We value that you are self-driven and proactive with good collaboration and problem-solving skills. You are interested in the challenges of research, have strong analytical skills, and a willingness to learn about both radar and materials that are new to you.

Meritorious

  • Knowledge or experience in radar or microwave technology.
  • Knowledge in measurement technology and electromagnetism.
  • Doctoral education.
  • Programming skills in Python, Matlab, Labview, C/C++, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working within or alongside the Armed Forces.
  • CAD skills in 3D.
