About the Workplace

Are you ready for a bigger challenge? The Swedish Police Authority is Sweden's largest authority with approximately 40,700 employees across the country. With us, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the Police's mission to increase safety and reduce crime in society.

The police area of Storgöteborg is divided into five local police areas: Gothenburg city, Kungälv/Ale, Storgöteborg Hisingen, Storgöteborg northeast, and Storgöteborg south. At the police area level, the investigative activities are organized into an investigation on-call and investigation section. Furthermore, there is a police area office.

Currently, about 90 employees work in investigation on-call section 2, divided into two work areas: person intake and interrogation zone. The person intake is responsible for the custody and supervision of deprived persons such as arrested individuals, those brought in for questioning, and individuals taken into custody under the law on intoxicated persons. The person intake is also responsible for initial investigative measures such as biometrics and evidence collection. The interrogation zone handles the logistics of detained individuals who need to be questioned.

Job Responsibilities

As a detention guard, you work at the center of events and act based on equal treatment and the police's values. You will be part of a smaller group of detention guards led by a group leader. The work in the detention center is conducted under the leadership of a station commander and in close collaboration with the local police area's other operations, such as intervention and investigative work. As a detention guard, you handle and meet individuals who are deprived of their freedom for various reasons. Many are deprived of freedom to investigate crimes, but it can also involve detentions due to intoxication or disturbances of public order. The pace of work varies over time and depends on how many people are deprived of their freedom for various reasons.

As a detention guard, you are the person with whom the detainee has the closest contact during their time in custody. Employment begins with a mandatory national internal training of four weeks full-time, concluding with a theoretical and practical exam. You must pass these exams to be able to work as a detention guard. If you are studying at the police academy and have completed courses in self-defense and law, there is a fast track.

Your main job responsibilities include:

• Assisting the intervention operations during reception and searching

• Monitoring and regularly checking on those in custody to ensure that the handling of the deprived individuals is done in a legally secure and correct manner

• Participating in sampling, body searches, photography, evidence collection, and fingerprinting

• Monitoring and transporting individuals who need to be questioned or transported

• Performing administrative tasks, such as using the police's data systems to document the custody and conducting record checks.

Qualifications

This is an opportunity for you who have:

• Completed high school education with full grades or equivalent education, or relevant work experience that the employer deems equivalent

• Experience working with a focus on personal contact with people that the employer considers relevant for the position (only contact via phone or computer is not relevant)

• Good ability to express yourself well in speech and writing in Swedish and English

• A valid manual B driver's license

• Work in the detention center can be both mentally and physically challenging. Therefore, it is important that you are in good physical and mental health.

It is an advantage if you also have:

• Previous experience working with individuals in vulnerable situations from, for example, the Police Authority, the Prison and Probation Service, social services, healthcare, or psychiatry

• Experience working as a detention guard or other work that the employer deems equivalent

• Ongoing or recently completed studies at the police academy and have passed courses in self-defense and law with satisfactory results

• Completed detention guard training with satisfactory results

Personal Characteristics

We are looking for someone who acts with maturity, integrity, and can respond calmly and professionally even in stressful situations. You have good self-awareness, empathetic ability, and can adapt your approach and demeanor for conflict prevention. You meet people who are both physically and mentally unwell, which requires a professional demeanor and an approach characterized by empathy and equal value for all, regardless of the reason for their deprivation of freedom. As a detention guard, you apply a high level of security awareness, which means you are reliable in situations where physical violence may arise, and you are skilled at both collaborating and working independently depending on the situation. The role requires you to prioritize and quickly switch between tasks and pace, as well as take initiative in your work.

We will place great emphasis on personal characteristics.
