Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science

The Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare aims to promote good animal husbandry and welfare, as well as contribute to economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable food production with high product quality. Through research, education, and collaboration, we develop knowledge about animals with a focus on feed and nutrition, care and environment, ethology and animal ethics, animal welfare, animal health, and animal protection. Our mission is to enhance understanding of farm animals, sport and companion animals, fish, research animals, and reindeer with scientifically based knowledge within our research areas.

The department conducts advanced and innovative research to develop the sustainable aquaculture of the future. With active researchers in nutrition, welfare, and production, as well as related fields, we work towards sustainable development of aquaculture. Using various techniques and a well-established research infrastructure, we can study future circular feed ingredients and fish welfare. We primarily work with salmonids but also some tropical fish species. Our expertise is broad and multidisciplinary, focusing on aquaculture in a Swedish and Nordic context. Here, there are great opportunities to advance research and shape the future of aquaculture.
