Job Advertisement: Legal Clerk at the Supreme Court
The primary task of the Supreme Court is to lead the application of law through guiding decisions. The Supreme Court is the final instance for civil cases, criminal cases, and matters that have been decided by the Court of Appeal. In addition to its main task as a precedent court, the Supreme Court also examines cases regarding retrials, judicial errors, and restoration of lost time, as well as cases concerning requests for extradition from other states and certain matters related to lawyers.
The Court aims to be a modern and attractive workplace with a particular focus on meaningful and developing tasks, individually tailored professional development, great opportunities to influence routines and work methods, as well as engaging and developing leadership. The Court actively works on organizational development. The goal is for employees to be involved and active in the development work.
Approximately 100 people work at the Supreme Court, of which 16 are judges (justices). The Supreme Court is organized into two adjudicating departments and a secretariat, which consists of two preparation units and an administrative unit with a registry office and archive, as well as other administrative functions.
Job Responsibilities
The cases in the Supreme Court are prepared and presented by judicial secretaries and legal clerks. The judicial secretaries are trained judges who are often experienced in various legal fields, such as the Government Offices, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, or the Chancellor of Justice. The legal clerks are qualified in district courts, often with some experience in similar legal work. As a legal clerk, you will be responsible for preparatory measures regarding both new and pending cases. Your main task will be to review new cases and propose the next procedural step, as well as conduct legal investigations and present cases for decision. You will thus play an important role in the Court's work to effectively and securely handle the cases that can be decided by a justice (simpler dispens cases and extraordinary cases). The work is largely conducted independently but also involves close collaboration with justices, judicial secretaries, court administrators, and preparation managers.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who is qualified in district courts. You should be highly skilled in law and meticulous, with a strong sense of responsibility and social competence. The work requires excellent collaboration skills, good judgment, flexibility, and the ability to work quickly while maintaining quality even under time pressure. It may be an advantage to have worked as a legal clerk or in a similar role in a district court or court of appeal after your clerkship. Other relevant work experience after your clerkship may also be advantageous.
To be considered for employment, you must meet high standards regarding judgment, security awareness, and suitability. This means that you uphold democratic values and the state values that govern the operations of the Swedish Courts. We require you to follow applicable laws. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.
Other Information
The employment is temporary, a 2-year fixed-term position. Several positions are available.
Please attach your clerk certificate to your application or provide a reference from the court.
To ensure an inclusive and fair recruitment process, the Swedish Courts apply competency-based recruitment. Our selection is based on candidates' competencies and qualifications.
