The Department of Languages and Literatures (SPL) is the largest department in the Faculty of Humanities with approximately 100 employees (of which 11 are PhD students) and about 1,200 full-time students. At the Department of Languages and Literatures, there is doctoral education in 11 subjects. The announced educational position(s) are part of a broad and dynamic research environment, where research is conducted in languages and literatures based on a broad cultural contextualization and a wide range of theoretical foundations and applications. The department has four overarching research areas that encompass part of our research: Literature and Cultural Studies, Language in Social Context, Linguistic Structures, and Language Learning and Teaching. Job Responsibilities
A PhD student should engage in studies at the doctoral level in accordance with the general study plan for the subject they are admitted to. The ultimate goal of the education is a doctoral degree. The PhD student conducts research and is expected to contribute to the development of knowledge within the subject. This includes developing their own ideas and communicating scientific results both orally and in writing. The PhD student should develop the knowledge and skills required to independently conduct research within the subject through the production of a scientific dissertation. The employment also aims for the PhD student to develop the ability to apply acquired scientific skills and knowledge in continued research work or in other qualified professional work.
The PhD student is expected to perform their work in Gothenburg and regularly and consistently participate in the department's activities on-site. This includes active participation in subject-specific and other research seminars. The department's working language is Swedish, and if necessary, the university offers introductory courses in the Swedish language.
The doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. Within the framework of your PhD employment, you may have departmental duties of up to 20% of full-time distributed over the entire education period, which will then generate a corresponding extension of the education period. Departmental duties usually include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, but research and administration may also be included.
