Department of Biological Basic Education (BIG)

The Department of Biological Basic Education (BIG) has about 10 employees.

The department is responsible for and administers all teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels in biology at Stockholm University. This includes providing conditions for teachers at other biology departments to conduct the best possible teaching, as well as supporting teachers and students throughout the educational process. The department is also responsible for the biology component of the natural science preparatory year. The preparatory year is a university preparatory program run in collaboration with Fysikum, the Department of Mathematics, and Kemikum. The purpose of the preparatory year is to provide eligibility for bachelor's programs in natural sciences and mathematics for students who do not have this from high school. Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities mainly consist of being responsible for the biology component of the university preparatory natural science year. This includes planning, teaching, and examination. In addition, the job responsibilities will also include some educational administration.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible for employment as a lecturer is someone who has obtained a master's degree in biology or has equivalent competence. The ability to express oneself well in both spoken and written Swedish and English is necessary. All teaching positions at Stockholm University require that the applicant has the ability to collaborate and is otherwise suitable to perform the job responsibilities.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment will be a holistic evaluation where special emphasis is placed on pedagogical skill and administrative ability. Some weight is also given to academic merits.

Additional Merits:

• High school teacher qualification in biology
• Doctorate in biology
• University pedagogical training of at least 15 higher education credits or equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways.
• Good computer skills, including digital tools for teaching and educational administration

About the Employment

The employment form of lecturer at Stockholm University does not entail promotion opportunities to higher scientific positions. The employment is full-time and is permanent. A six-month probationary period may be applied. Start date in the spring semester of 2026 or by agreement.
