Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science

Department of Animal Bioveterinary Sciences

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach aimed at sustainably balancing and optimizing the health of people, animals, and ecosystems, recognizing that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the broader environment are closely interconnected and interdependent. By linking people, animals, and the environment, One Health can help address the full spectrum of disease control – from prevention to detection, preparedness, response, and management – contributing to global health. The VH Faculty hosts the platform SLU Future One Health, a strategic platform for promoting interdisciplinary research, education, and collaboration for the good health and welfare of animals and humans in sustainable ecosystems.

As a complement to the faculty-wide role of SLU Future One Health, the VH faculty is now establishing a One Health Hub from the perspective of animal husbandry. The hub has three core areas, each led by a One Health Professor: 1) Comparative Medicine: similarities and differences in biology between domestic animals and humans, 2) Antimicrobial Resistance: combating ineffective medications, and 3) Food-producing healthy animals in circular systems.

The Department of Animal Bioveterinary Sciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education and research in several fundamental and applied scientific areas. These areas include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, genetics, breeding, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, epizootiology, comparative medicine, food safety, bioinformatics, veterinary public health, and One Health. Our research encompasses everything from production animals to sport and companion animals, laboratory animals, and wildlife. The department's researchers work across the spectrum from molecular mechanisms and microbiology to the structure, function, and behavior of animals, and how these are affected by breeding, physical activity, husbandry, production, stress, environmental factors, and diseases.
