Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) is looking for an engineer in digital image analysis

The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) belongs to the field of medicine and pharmacy and has about 160 employees and around 200 registered doctoral students, most of whom are clinically active doctors and nurses.

At the department, research and teaching are conducted at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. Teaching takes place, among other things, within the medical, nursing, radiography, and specialist nursing programs. Research is conducted in research groups organized according to different surgical specialties and related subjects such as anesthesia, intensive care, and radiology. Much research is conducted in collaboration between different research groups within IKV and at other institutions at Uppsala University as well as with other universities both in Sweden and internationally. Many of the department's employees have positions associated with roles at the Academic Hospital.

Job Responsibilities

The project involves scaling up already conducted analyses for detailed studies of body composition in the UK Biobank to a larger dataset. From previously about 40,000 images to now about 80,000. The project also involves conducting various prediction studies using techniques that utilize image registration and so-called supervoxels.

Planned tasks include, among other things, image analysis of whole-body MRI images in the UK Biobank. The work includes data processing such as quality control, various types of formatting, large-scale image registration, segmentation/division of images into so-called supervoxels, etc. It also includes further developing the software DeepPaint and assisting various projects for quantifying different biomarkers in ongoing clinical research projects using this software.

Qualifications

For this position, we are looking for a person with:

• Engineering degree or equivalent competence that the employer assesses as equivalent
• Theoretical and practical experience of projects in digital image analysis
• Experience with projects involving both MRI and CT images
• Experience in image registration, supervoxels, and semi-automatic image segmentation tools
• Very good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, such as being self-driven, proactive, and quality-conscious. You have good collaboration skills, good problem-solving analytical skills, and you are persistent. You set high goals for yourself and work hard to achieve them.

Desirable/meritorious

Experience in handling large amounts of image data and practical experience of the aforementioned tasks are meritorious. Completed courses in digital image analysis and machine learning are also meritorious.

About the Employment

The employment is temporary until 2025-07-31. The extent is 100%. Start date as soon as possible by agreement. Location: Uppsala
