PhD Position in Vascular Biology and Immunology

The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thus foster closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted in cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, as well as vascular biology. Parts of the activities are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. Job Responsibilities

We offer a PhD position for highly motivated candidates with an interest in vascular biology and immunology in the research group of Associate Professor Peetra Magnusson at Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, research program in Vascular Biology. The research in the lab focuses on diseases that specifically affect the blood vessels of the brain, including cavernoma.

In this project, you will work with new experimental models to mimic blood vessels in the human brain in health and disease. Key methods in the project include; cell culture of primary cells and stem cells, molecular biotechnology, and pharmacological screening to find new therapies for vascular diseases that lack pharmaceutical treatment. You will work in a dynamic, international, and multidisciplinary team including close collaborations in translational projects with clinicians as well as with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Additionally, you will join the recently established interdisciplinary center, CNSx3, which brings together leading research groups from Uppsala, Linköping, and Gothenburg universities, as well as Chalmers University of Technology.

Qualifications

To be eligible for doctoral education, the applicant must:

• Hold a master's degree in molecular medicine, biomedicine, or a related field.
• Have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at an advanced level, including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or
• Have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

The position also requires:

• Education and in-depth knowledge in molecular biology, genetics, and vascular biology.
• Education and advanced experience in experimental research including the culture of primary human endothelial cells, as well as the culture and differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), molecular and cell biological methods such as bacterial transformation, microscopy, and relevant image processing and analysis.
• Knowledge of scientific software such as CellProfiler, ImageJ, GraphPad, SnapGene, LasX.
• Knowledge of scientific methodology and statistical data analysis.
• Excellent communication skills in English, both spoken and written.
• Proven ability to work effectively in teams, with strong personal suitability.

For employment, it is required that the holder is admitted or will be admitted to doctoral education. Regulations for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§1-7 and the university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/ (http://regler.uu.se/). The doctoral student shall primarily devote themselves to their own doctoral education.

Other duties at the department, such as teaching and administrative work, may be included within the framework of the doctoral position (max 20%). The education at the doctoral level normally comprises 4 years of full-time studies, a maximum of 5 years if departmental duties are included.

Selection of applicants is made by the supervisor in consultation with the department's doctoral education group. The doctoral education committee within the field of medicine-pharmacy admits the doctoral student. Salary placement is made according to local guidelines at Uppsala University.

Desirable/meritorious

Theoretical knowledge in vascular biology and/or immunology. Experience in primary cell culture of endothelial cells, iPSC, and having previously worked with patient-derived materials are strong merits.

About the Position
