Job Responsibilities

The education in medical science consists of conducting a scientific project and participating in doctoral-level courses of at least 30 higher education credits. The education concludes with the PhD student writing a scientific compilation thesis or a monograph corresponding to at least 120 higher education credits. Project: Ultra-processed foods (UPF) have undergone extensive industrial processing. Although a high intake of UPF is associated with obesity and lifestyle diseases, there is no established causal relationship between the degree of food processing, regardless of nutritional profile, and health. The overall aim of this PhD project is to study the effects of high UPF intake compared to a nutrient-matched low intake of UPF, on appetite and cardiometabolic health. Additionally, biomarkers for measuring habitual UPF exposure will be identified.

As a PhD student, you need to be able to work both independently and collaboratively with others in the research group. You should be structured and meticulous and have a professional and positive attitude. The project requires good knowledge of the Swedish language in both spoken and written form as recruitment of test subjects will be conducted in Swedish. Personal suitability is highly valued.

Doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. Within the framework of your PhD employment, you may have departmental duties amounting to a maximum of 20% of full-time distributed over the entire education period, which will then generate a corresponding extension of the education period. Departmental duties usually include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, but research and administration may also be included.

Eligibility

To be admitted to doctoral education, basic eligibility and, if applicable, the specific eligibility established in the general study plan for the doctoral subject is required.

Basic eligibility for doctoral education is met by those who:

1. have obtained a master's degree, or
2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
3. have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Specific eligibility for doctoral education in medical science is met by those who have completed the course English B/6 with a passing grade or are assessed to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.

Admission and Employment

After being admitted to doctoral education, you will receive a PhD position at the University of Gothenburg. Regulations for employment as a PhD student can be found in the regulation SFS 1993:100. The first employment as a PhD student may last for a maximum of one year and may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. A PhD student may be employed as a PhD student for a maximum of eight years, but the total employment time may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years.

Placement: Sahlgrenska Academy, Department of Medicine, Division of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition. Scope 100%. Start date by agreement.

The university applies a local agreement on salary setting for PhD students.

The doctoral education at the Department of Medicine requires physical presence to conduct studies. If the admitted person needs a residence permit to study in Sweden, the Department of Medicine has the right to revoke the admission decision if the admitted person cannot present a valid residence permit by the date of study start.
