Firmware Developer at FOI
FOI, the Total Defense Research Institute, is one of Europe's leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defense, and our mission is to conduct research, method and technology development, and investigations to support total defense, disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our activities are primarily conducted on behalf of the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have about 1400 employees, of which over 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and engineering to social and political sciences.
Do you want to help develop the next generation of advanced radio systems for signal intelligence and jamming? Do you want to use your knowledge in firmware development to strengthen Sweden's defense and security?
Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!
About the Position
You will work at the forefront of technology and collaborate with others to develop systems to realize our research results. Your contributions will mainly be in VHDL and C running on modern FPGA and ARM circuits, focusing on implementing experimental algorithms and analysis functions in our experimental and demonstrator systems. Our prototypes can often become future defense systems, which means we develop solutions that not only use the latest technology but also future technology. Since we test our systems in realistic environments with field measurements, it is a plus if you appreciate being outside of office and lab environments.
As our unit covers a broad range of technologies, there are great opportunities for varied tasks, including close contact with interested recipients within the Armed Forces. Our projects are relatively small, so your contributions will be a significant part of the whole, and you will have a great opportunity to influence project outcomes. You will have good opportunities to follow an idea from sketch to finished system while also deepening your expertise in your specialist area.
About the Unit
You will be part of the Electronic Warfare against Radio Communication unit, which belongs to the Electronic Warfare department. The unit strengthens Sweden's security by developing new radio systems for signal intelligence against and jamming of an adversary's communication systems. We work closely with our recipients in the Armed Forces but also have good contacts with the academic world and the development industry. We develop the entire chain from advanced algorithms to hardware prototypes, which are often tested in real environments together with our clients. Here, you can contribute to a safer world in an inspiring and applied research environment. We do what no one else does!
Do you have the skill set we need?
Requirements
We are looking for someone who has:
- A Master's degree in engineering with a focus on firmware development, system-on-chip, or similar
- Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written
As an employee at FOI, you will have a job with significant autonomy, which means you need to be proactive and self-driven. Since you will work in project form, you also need to enjoy developing solutions together with others. You should also have good problem-solving and analytical skills.
Meritorious
It is meritorious if you have:
- Competence in signal processing, radio technology, or electronics
- Previous work experience in firmware and/or software development
- Experience in Xilinx environments or embedded Linux systems
