Kriminalvården is Growing – We Are Looking for More Employees

Kriminalvården is expanding – we are building new facilities, renovating, and adding more spaces, and we are now seeking more employees. Our primary goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transportation.

The Skogome facility is the largest prison in Sweden for male offenders convicted of sexual crimes in security class 2. There is also a smaller psychiatric care unit. The Skogome prison opened in 1957 and is located at Lillhagsvägen 301 on Hisingen in Gothenburg. The prison currently has about 250 employees distributed across various professional groups and competencies. In a renovation and new construction project starting this year, the prison will nearly double its capacity, with more modern facilities and larger spaces for treatment and activities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a correctional officer, you are the foundation of security work. You work in teams with other professionals to maintain a safe and secure environment and motivate clients towards a life without crime. Clear routines are a natural part of your daily work. You are the one who opens the door to the living quarters in the morning and locks it in the evening.

You accompany clients to work and education, search and supervise outdoor recreation areas and training facilities. You also have daily contact with clients to know how they are doing and you are part of the release preparation process.

Working in a prison is varied: care, surveillance, searching, and security work are mixed with release planning and conversation and motivation work.

Depending on the number of training places and our need for staff, you will begin your employment with either training or work. If you start working directly, the intention is for you to begin your correctional officer training as soon as possible. This is a mandatory 23-week training program, and you will receive full salary during the entire training period. The training combines theory and practice.

After your probationary period, a comprehensive assessment will be made regarding your eligibility for permanent employment.

In this recruitment process, information sessions will be held to give you a better understanding of what it means to work at the Skogome facility. The information sessions will take place on two occasions, and if you are invited, you will need to attend one of them. A separate invitation will be sent if you proceed in the process.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you will drive the operations, so you need to have good collaboration skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Work experience, including seasonal work, temporary employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment.
• A complete high school education or other education combined with work experience that Kriminalvården deems relevant.
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both spoken and written form.
• Good computer skills.

It is advantageous if you have:

• Work experience from correctional services, security work, social care, psychiatry, or health and social care.
• Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management.
• A valid driver's license (B).
• Relevant language skills.

Kriminalvården places great importance on personal suitability.

OTHER

We have high demands on our employees' security and confidentiality awareness.

A security check will precede the decision on employment. Certain positions are placed in security class, and a security assessment with a background check will be conducted before a hiring decision is made. For positions with a higher security class, you must be a Swedish citizen, but you may have a foreign background.
