Job Advertisement: Software Developer with a Focus on Natural Science

Are you passionate about programming, interested in science, public benefit, and project management? Then a job with our assignments is perfect for you.

SMHI has a number of assignments for other authorities where we connect our expertise in natural science models, large data sets, and AI with the needs of the clients. We are looking for someone who can lead a small group of experts to develop and maintain systems that can be robustly deployed in a 24/7 production environment. We work in a Linux environment, with high demands on availability and great freedom in choosing tools.

The assignments require you to actively engage in dialogue with the client to understand their needs and have the technical knowledge to implement the solutions yourself or together with other software developers, natural scientists, and researchers. Through the various competencies, a creative and learning environment is created.

Your first assignment will be to continue the development of fire risk calculations for MSB (the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) together with a fire risk expert and SMHI's satellite and web team. SMHI has long-standing relationships with our clients, which allows for a deeper understanding of the science, while our technical ecosystem (new data formats, a changing data flow, new societal needs) requires constant monitoring and changes.

Your Profile

We are looking for someone with a degree in technical physics, civil or engineering, software development, natural sciences, or other experience/competence that SMHI deems equivalent. We would also like you to have education/experience in leadership such as activity management or project management.

The following is also required for the position:

  • Good software development skills, primarily in Python or equivalent languages
  • Experience in a Linux environment as all servers where tools and programs are installed are in Linux
  • Good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written (equivalent to B1)
  • Fluent English, both spoken and written

Knowledge of tools in the following areas is advantageous:

  • Python and meteorological, hydrological, oceanographic models or fire risk calculations.
  • Project management/activity management
  • Modern development environments and techniques such as data science libraries, GIS, container technology, databases, machine learning, parallel programming, and agile methodologies.

We believe you have a genuine interest in software development and enjoy combining it with a curiosity for natural sciences. You thrive in collaborations and find it easy to create good contacts, both internally and externally. You see the value in working in teams – especially when it is done with agile methods and a Lean mindset. Perhaps you are also attracted to taking leading roles in assignments and contributing to the development of both yourself and others.

As a person, you are solution-oriented, engaged, and enjoy creating benefits for others. You easily see opportunities, even when the conditions are not entirely clear from the beginning. With your analytical ability and attentiveness, you can translate ideas and needs into smart, cost-effective system solutions. The role also involves taking responsibility and driving the work forward – something you do with both structure and empathy.

What Can We Offer You?

At SMHI, you will become part of a knowledgeable team where you work closely with colleagues with different competencies. The work takes place in a dynamic environment where we often work on smaller projects, but where we can quickly adapt based on the needs of the organization. You will delve into technology and science that makes a real difference. As a government employee, you are offered secure conditions, good pension solutions, a generous wellness allowance, etc. We also have an active association life and social activities.

Welcome to a workplace where your competence makes a difference – every day, all year round.

About the Model and System Unit

The position is at SMHI's Model and System unit. We are responsible for SMHI's operational models and other systems within meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, satellite, and radar. For calculations, we use everything from PC machines to Linux clusters at the NSC (National Supercomputer Centre) in Linköping. Data calculations are handled by various systems where different types of post-processing occur, using several methodologies, including AI. The results of the calculations and processing are used, among other things, in forecasting and warning operations.

Employment type: Permanent

Location: The position is at our office in Norrköping.

Travel: May occur both within and outside Sweden.

Number: 1 - 2 positions

Application deadline: April 15, 2025.
