Job Responsibilities

Together with, and on behalf of, the client, the individual’s needs and wishes for care, support, and services in important areas of life are formulated. The personal representative assists the client in contacts with authorities and healthcare providers.

The support from the personal representative can involve the individual completely lacking or having insufficient services, or that the individual is not satisfied with the services and support measures available. It can also involve that the relevant authorities and healthcare providers do not collaborate sufficiently to meet the individual’s needs. The personal representative should be a help for self-help, a guiding function that supports by seeking social information and making it understandable through a pedagogical approach.

The assignment includes identifying shortcomings in the welfare system and reporting these. In this way, the personal representative contributes to better living conditions for the entire target group. As a personal representative, you convey hope and make a difference so that the individual has a better opportunity to experience greater independence, better quality of life, the possibility of recovery based on individual conditions, and greater participation in society. When the collaboration between the personal representative and the client works well, it ultimately leads to increased empowerment. The personal representative should not make themselves indispensable but instead work to ensure that the usual social functions take over and support the individual further based on needs and wishes.

Qualifications

To work as a personal representative in Malmö city, a university degree with at least 180 higher education credits in the behavioral sciences, educational area, or other equivalent qualifications as assessed by the employer is required.

You who apply should have at least one year of experience working in a relationship-building professional role and feel confident in creating and maintaining good and constructive relationships with clients, relatives as well as different community actors.

We consider it an advantage if you have experience in individually guiding, motivating, and supportive work. Experience and knowledge from different cultural and ethnic contexts are desirable, as well as good knowledge of gender issues and LGBTQI matters.

The ability to receive and understand information and to express oneself well in spoken and written Swedish is a requirement. Language skills in languages other than Swedish are meritorious.

Important qualities required for the professional role:

A very strong commitment and willingness to contribute to improving the living conditions for the target group. Sensitivity, humility, and decisiveness. Unpretentiousness and further responsibility for working on one’s own personal development. High awareness of how power balance affects the relationship between the personal representative and the client and what demands it places on your professionalism in your professional role. Very good ability to seek different types of social information and contribute to the client getting closer to their own goals by making conscious and well-founded choices. Good collaboration skills and the ability to prioritize the client’s needs. As changed conditions and needs among clients are common, adaptability and flexibility are required, as well as the ability to plan, structure, and prioritize. Ability to take great personal responsibility but also to take the initiative for help and consultation from colleagues and supervisors when needed. Sharing knowledge and experiences and contributing to a good working climate in the workplace is of utmost importance.

About the Workplace

The personal representative is a cross-municipal operation organized under the Functional Support Administration. The target group for the operation is Malmö residents aged 18 and older who live with a long-term and extensive mental disability that entails significant difficulties in important areas of life. The personal representative does not exercise any authority. Malmö city has 14 positions for personal representatives and one section manager.

Working hours are scheduled normal working hours from 08:00 to 16:30 with a flexible working model.

In the Functional Support Administration, over 3000 employees work together to create and develop even better support and services for people with disabilities. Our operations are within LSS, social psychiatry, personal assistance, guides, and respite care. Severely ill children who are cared for at home are also included in our mission.
