Workplace Description
The Department of Technology and Society consists of over 80 employees, including senior researchers, PhD students, and administrative staff.
Socioeconomic Technology Studies (SoeTech) is a multidisciplinary research group conducting research focused on the social and economic consequences of technology-driven structural transformation at the societal level. This PhD position is part of a five-year research project funded by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). The project examines how digitalization affects business and market structure and economic analysis of cybersecurity issues.
Subject Description
Technology and Society is a research education subject that encompasses multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on the role and impact of technology on various parts of society. The research conducted within SoeTech is primarily based on economic analysis and currently includes economics, economic geography, sociology, political science, and economic history.
The PhD position is part of a cross-disciplinary research project on cybersecurity economics, funded by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). In addition to SoeTech researchers, researchers from the Swedish Defence University and Uppsala University in technology and psychology are involved, as well as a PhD student in psychology at Uppsala University.
The research work related to the PhD position will primarily focus on how digitalization affects business and market structure and the economic analysis of technical interdependencies between companies and cybersecurity. This will primarily be done through quantitative analysis of data collected for this project regarding the use of cloud services, investments in digital transformation, and cybersecurity measures in Swedish companies.
Job Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the PhD candidates are to engage in their research studies, which include participation in the mentioned research project, research education courses, and joint research activities within SoeTech. The tasks may also include teaching and other departmental duties (up to 20%).
Eligibility
Basic eligibility for doctoral education is met by those who have:
- completed a master's degree or
- fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad.
The requirements for specific eligibility for the research education subject Technology and Society are met by those who have:
- 30 higher education credits at the master's level relevant to the subject area.
Other requirements:
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English and Swedish, which is required as all documentation is in Swedish.
- Good ability to work both independently and with others to publish scientific articles spanning multiple disciplines.
Assessment Criteria
Selection for doctoral education is based on the assessed ability to benefit from the doctoral education. The assessment of ability is primarily based on study results at the undergraduate and master's levels. The following will be considered:
- Knowledge and skills relevant to the dissertation work and subject area.
- Assessed ability for independent work and the ability to formulate and tackle scientific problems.
- Ability for written and oral communication.
- Other experiences relevant to doctoral education, e.g., professional experience.
We consider it an advantage if you have:
- Master's level education in economics and/or computer science or a related field.
- Experience in quantitative analysis within economics or a related field.
- Experience in participating in public debate.
Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant is assessed to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral education based on their experience and competence.

Other
Only those who are admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. Doctoral education lasts four years for full-time studies. If teaching and other departmental work is included, the employment is extended accordingly, but for a maximum of 5 years (i.e., max 20%). Regulations regarding employment as a PhD candidate can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
