Researcher in Traffic Safety and Behavior

Workplace Description

The Traffic and Road department is part of the Department of Technology and Society. We have about 40 employees and have offices on the LTH campus.

You will primarily work within the research group Traffic Safety and Behavior, but in collaboration with other research groups at the department. The group researches many topics related to traffic safety, such as policy development and implementation, evaluation of traffic safety measures, traffic safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and automated vehicles. The group uses data-driven methods to collect traffic data and conduct traffic safety evaluations, such as video analysis, indirect traffic safety measures, simulations in virtual reality, and equipped bicycles. We also work with studies based on interviews, surveys, observations, and other research methods among users and experts. The group is involved in many national and international activities related to research and education in traffic safety.

Our research group consists of nine people with various roles including university lecturer, postdoc, researcher, TA staff, and PhD students. We offer a supportive and friendly environment with many opportunities for personal development.

Job Responsibilities

You will work on research in traffic safety based in the research group Traffic Safety and Behavior and at the intersection of traffic safety and mobility.

Your responsibilities include:

  • You will have particular responsibility for research related to policy development and implementation based on the Vision Zero, Agenda 2030, the Stockholm Declaration, and the Marrakech Declaration.
  • This work includes collaborating within the research group and with other research groups at the department to develop research and assist in seeking research funding.
  • You will also collaborate with partners, stakeholders, and funders.
  • Your role includes participating to a lesser extent in teaching at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels (max 20%).
  • The position offers opportunities for higher education pedagogical training.
  • You will also participate to some extent in supervising thesis students and PhD candidates.
  • Administration related to the above tasks is included.

The position involves travel within Sweden and abroad based on current assignments.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • You must have a PhD in traffic planning, traffic engineering, or equivalent.
  • You must have excellent knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written.
  • You have knowledge and experience in mixed-method research that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • You have knowledge and experience in research involving various user groups (citizens and road users) as well as experts (practitioners, decision-makers, etc.), that is, as research subjects and participants (participatory design).
  • You have knowledge and experience in interdisciplinary research, based on engineering science as a foundation, and combining this foundation with knowledge, theories, methods, and perspectives from other scientific disciplines relevant to research in traffic safety and mobility.
  • You have experience from research assignments and qualified investigations within Swedish transport planning and mobility work related to traffic safety in a Swedish context based on Vision Zero and Agenda 2030.

Regarding personal qualities, the position requires you to be self-driven, have good collaborative skills, and the ability to think strategically and systematically to manage and solve complex problems and challenges together with others (the research group, external partners, stakeholders, and funders, etc.). It is also required that you create contacts and maintain relationships in professional contexts.

The position requires a driving license (B).

Desirable for the position is:

  • If you have experience in teaching and course activities aimed at both students and professionals in traffic planning, transport planning, and/or traffic safety.

Other

The position is a fixed-term contract for two years and is for 50% of full-time. Start date in April 2025 or by agreement. The position is not a teaching position but is instead covered by the Flexible Working Hours Agreement for TA staff.
