PhD Position in Fluid Mechanics of Sea Ice

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Science at Chalmers University is offering a doctoral position on the fluid mechanics of sea ice.

Sea ice behavior affects heat and mass exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean in polar regions, playing an important role in global climate and ocean ecosystems. The project investigates the fluid mechanics that govern the microscopic heat and mass transport phenomena of sea ice and brine dynamics during melting and growing.

The successful candidate will contribute to generating new knowledge regarding the role that sea ice plays in world climate and oceans. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR).

Project Overview

Within this project, you will use pore-scale direct numerical simulations (based on the lattice-Boltzmann method) to enable the precise quantification of the onset/end of brine convection trespassing the sea-ice microstructure to the underlying ocean.

The PhD position also includes teaching courses within Chalmers' undergraduate level corresponding to up to 20 percent of the working hours.

Information about the Division and the Department

The position will be open at the Fluid Dynamics division of the Mechanical and Maritime Science department. The research at the Division covers turbulent flow (both compressible and incompressible), multiphase flows, aero-acoustics, and turbomachines. Our tools include both computations and experiments. The research covers a wide range of topics. In some research projects, the smallest turbulent scales are studied whereas in others the function of a complete gas turbine is analyzed and modeled. The Division of Fluid Dynamics is part of Chalmers Sustainable Transport Initiative, Chalmers eScience Initiative, and Chalmers Energy Initiative.

Main Responsibilities

  • Research via state-of-the-art computational tools
  • Writing scientific articles
  • Involved in scientifically excellent environment and initiatives
  • Participating and presenting at international conferences
  • Generate new scientific knowledge

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

  • MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Hydraulic/Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aeronautics, or any corresponding MSc.
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics.
  • Experience with programming.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract Terms

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
