Project Description
PhD Subject: Information and Communication Technology
Wireless technology has evolved through five generations, but the need for higher efficiency and reliability never ends.
6G research aims to identify new groundbreaking methods that enable tomorrow's wireless applications. The research interest is particularly high for developing systems at higher frequencies, beyond millimeter waves, in 6G and other future technologies. This includes sub-terahertz (sub-THz, 100 GHz – 300 GHz) and terahertz (THz, 300 GHz – 3 THz) bands that theoretically enable both extreme high-speed connectivity and extremely high-resolution radar detection.
In this PhD project, you will contribute to the theoretical framework for mobile sub-THz and THz wireless communication systems for 6G and other future technologies, establishing yourself at the international forefront. Possible research subfields are related to physically large antenna arrays, near-field THz communication, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS), integrated terahertz communication and radar (ISAC), massive and distributed MIMO at sub-terahertz frequencies, and terahertz communication for satellite networks. The research will focus on the physical layer and MAC layer. Methods from probability theory, communication theory, electromagnetism, optimization, and machine learning will play an important role.
The research can focus on one of these two research tracks:
- Mobile near-field THz communication,
- Mobile satellite THz communication,
but there are opportunities to tailor the research to your personal interests.
The research is fully funded and will be conducted at the Department of Communication Systems under the supervision of Assistant Professor Vitaly Petrov and Professor Emil Björnson. The results will be published in top-tier journals and prepare you for a research career in academia and industry.
Supervision: Vitaly Petrov, Emil Björnson

Eligibility for Admission
To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed a degree at the advanced level, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

- and communicate well in English.
After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.
Target Degree: Doctorate
Information on Admission and Employment
Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within e.g. education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.

The application should include the following content:
- CV with relevant professional experiences and skills.
- Cover letter with a brief account of why you want to pursue doctoral studies, your academic interests, and how they relate to your previous studies and future goals (Max 2 pages). Please indicate in your cover letter which research track you are most interested in: the first (near-field THz communication), the second (satellite THz communication), or both.
- Copies of degree certificates and transcripts from previous university studies and proof of fulfilled language requirements (see above). Translations into English or Swedish if the original document is not issued in one of these languages. Copies of originals must be certified.
- Representative publications or technical reports. For longer documents, please attach a summary (abstract) and a web link to the full text.
