Department Head for Burial and Service Operations

The Stockholm Cemetery Administration is responsible for burial operations in Stockholm. The administration conducts burial and service activities with high ethical standards and is responsible for 12 cemeteries, 13 chapels, and 2 crematoria with significant cultural-historical value.

Our holdings extend from Strand Cemetery in the southeast to Hässelby in the northwest.

Here you will find the World Heritage Site Skogskyrkogården and the well-known Northern Cemetery and Galärvarv Cemetery. Last year, the beautiful and acclaimed new cemetery in Järva was also inaugurated.

The Cemetery Administration is led by a director with currently four associated departments. You will be responsible for and lead the department for burial and service. This department is the largest in the administration and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all cemeteries with about 70 permanent employees, which grows to around 140 employees between April and September with seasonal staff.

Your role

As department head, you will be part of the administration's management team and report directly to the director. The role involves working both strategically and operationally with overall personnel and budget responsibility for the department. Currently, a review of the management structure, the size of workgroups, and working methods is underway, which you will have the opportunity to influence to some extent. More units are likely to be established to strengthen present and clear leadership.

The department consists, in addition to the department head, currently of three unit managers, a staff of specialists, and personnel at the various cemeteries responsible for grave and park maintenance.

An important part of your mission is to unify and find common working methods for the department's units. You should also be able to initiate and drive development work where the development of working methods and increased collaboration between the administration's units will be important parts. Together with other managers, you have a significant responsibility for the administration's development and creating good results.

Your skills and experience

For this position, you must have:

  • Relevant university education or other training combined with professional experience deemed equivalent by the employer
  • Several years of current managerial/leadership experience
  • Several years of experience in a similar role or with a focus on park maintenance, land management

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in cemetery administration
  • Experience in change management and/or development work
  • Experience leading through managers
