Research Assistant in Organism Biology
At the Department of Organism Biology, we conduct teaching and research on evolution, development, and function at the organism level.
We also study the deepest branches of the tree of life using bioinformatics and experimental molecular techniques. Research on how anthropogenic chemicals interact with cell functions and lead to long-term health effects on humans and animals is also conducted. For more information see here (https://www.uu.se/institution/organismbiologi/).
This project is part of an ERC Consolidator Grant (PlastidOrigin) awarded to Fabien Burki, aiming to study one of the most transformative events in eukaryotic evolution – the origin of photosynthetic organelles (the primary plastids) in Archaeplastida.
Job Responsibilities
Maintain knowledge and workflow to perform proteomic experiments in the lab. Use hyperLOPIT on red algae and glaucophytes. Be the contact person for communication with mass spectrometry facilities. Perform routine maintenance of cell cultures. Develop cellular transformation in red algae. Work with high-resolution 3D microscopy data, such as FIB-SEM data. Generate and analyze RNA-seq data. Culture red algal cultures and run hyperLOPIT. Derive the cellular localization of proteins using machine learning. Analyze data in a plastid development context. Disseminate results in appropriate formats, including in leading peer-reviewed publications and at conferences. Training of junior group members may also be included, as well as other standard tasks related to a research group.
Qualifications
PhD in biology or equivalent. The candidate should have a solid list, appropriate for their career stage, of high-quality research publications. For this position, proven experience in mass spectrometry and proteomics is absolutely essential and must be demonstrated through scientific publications in these fields. The applicant should also have documented skills in wet lab techniques, such as molecular biology (i.e., PCR, cloning, Western blot, SDS-PAGE, protein/DNA/RNA extractions), cellular transformation, and cell culture. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required. Excellent skills in statistical analysis and bioinformatics (especially in R) are required, and prior experience with R packages for spatial proteomic analysis, such as pRoloc, is highly advantageous.
Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities such as high motivation, planning and organizational skills, problem-solving, and stress management. We are looking for an enthusiastic person with the willingness to share and establish a new methodology in the Burki lab. We strive to create a friendly atmosphere among team members and other employees at the workplace, so a collegial ability to work as part of a team is essential.
Desirable/meritorious
Previous experience in 3D image analysis, such as FIB-SEM data, will be considered a valuable merit. Knowledge of methods for subcellular fractionation (using ultracentrifugation) and of hyperLOPIT or LOPIT-DC will be seen as a significant asset. A strong interest in evolution and microbial eukaryotes is a desirable trait. You should be willing to travel, for shorter (e.g., conferences) or longer periods if the project requires it.
About the Employment
The position is permanent, with a probationary period applicable. Full-time position. Start date 2025-04-01 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
