Position at the Tandem Laboratory, Uppsala University
The Tandem Laboratory is a national infrastructure at Uppsala University that provides and develops methods for material characterization using fast ions.
The equipment includes several accelerators as well as ion sources and many different experimental measurement stations with advanced detectors and complex electronics for analysis. Within the Tandem Laboratory's operations, alongside the application of already established accelerator-based material analytical techniques in world-leading research and industrial applications, there is a constant development of new methods for ion beam-based non-destructive analysis of materials at the nanometer level. The candidate for the position will participate in both the operation and maintenance of existing equipment as well as the development of new instrumentation, often in close collaboration with researchers active at the infrastructure. Several development projects are underway at the laboratory aimed at constructing new instrumentation primarily for in-situ analysis of materials after synthesis or various modification processes. The advertised position includes two focus areas: a) design and development of the implantation facility with a special focus on the manufacture and characterization of quantum materials b) design and development of the new integrated infrastructure for the analysis of light elements using various methods - “LigHt”.
Responsibilities
- Operation of accelerator facilities for material modification and material analysis.
- Installation and testing of new equipment for non-destructive material analysis using ion beams or other measurement methods.
- User support at facilities for material analysis and material modification.
- Mechanical design, assembly, and testing.
- Operation, maintenance, and development of electronics.
- Supervision of other technical staff.
- General technical support for operation and development at the Tandem Laboratory.
- Some administration in the form of technical documentation.
Project Description
The applicant will, in collaboration with other group members, be responsible for installation, operation, maintenance, planning, documentation, and quality control of technical equipment and experiments. One focus area will be upgrades of the 5 MV pelletron facility and its integration with a synthesis system, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and equipment for X-ray-based instrumentation. Equipment includes ultra-high vacuum systems, high-voltage apparatus, and control electronics.
Qualifications
MSc in engineering or physics or equivalent work experience in a relevant field. A doctoral thesis in a technical or natural science subject is an asset. We are looking for qualified and motivated candidates with a strong interest in supporting academic research. Knowledge and experience in electronics and mechanical work as well as quality control are required. Good verbal and written proficiency in English is a requirement, as well as the ability to take initiative and work both independently and in a team. Previous experience with accelerator equipment or atomic and nuclear physics experiments is desirable and advantageous, as well as experience with high vacuum technology and high voltage technology as well as electronics. Previous experience in supervising other technical staff is desirable. Documented experience collaborating with researchers is advantageous. We expect that you want to take responsibility, can manage multiple activities simultaneously, are innovative, and have a genuine interest in technology. The successful candidate is expected to possess the personal qualities required to perform the position well.
Application
The application should be written in English and should include a brief description of relevant experiences, CV, copies of diplomas and grades, and any other documents the applicant wishes to submit. We also welcome you to provide references or attach recommendation letters.
