2 Postdoctoral Researchers in Hydrothermal Transformation of Volcanic Systems

Do you want to work with volcanic hazards related to hydrothermal transformation of volcanic rocks with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? To further expand our efforts in this area, we invite applicants to join our growing international team.

Would you like an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position in hydrothermal transformation of volcanic rocks at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's largest and most versatile institution of its kind, with a unique breadth and approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural sciences and engineering with social sciences. We have research programs in air, water, and landscape studies; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By studying the Earth's history, we understand how the planet has evolved and how our pursuit of sustainable development can benefit from this knowledge. For more information: Department of Earth Sciences (https://www.geo.uu.se/).

Research at the section for Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU) at the Department of Earth Sciences covers a wide range of topics, including mineral and metal resources for society and the energy transition, geohazards and resilient communities, climate change, and active biodiversity. The Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology group at NRHU is currently seeking a postdoctoral researcher who can contribute to the ERC-funded project ROTTnROCK. The project aims to investigate how hydrothermal transformation affects rock stability and contributes to the sometimes unpredictable behavior of volcanoes by integrating results from remote sensing, mineralogy and geochemistry, rock mechanics, and numerical modeling. For more information: NRHU (https://www.uu.se/institution/geovetenskaper/forskning/naturresurser-och-hallbar-utveckling) and ROTTnROCK (https://www.rottnrock.eu/).

Job Responsibilities

The research focuses on mineralogy and geochemistry in hydrothermally altered rocks from a range of different volcanoes (e.g., Canary Islands, Indonesia, Iceland, Central and South America). The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the establishment of our laboratory, where high-temperature simulations of transformation processes will take place. As a member of the “RottnRock” team, the postdoctoral researcher will also collaborate closely with other project leaders and members based at GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Université de Strasbourg, and University College Dublin.

Qualifications

A PhD in mineralogy, petrology, and/or geochemistry or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in mineralogy, petrology, and/or geochemistry. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have obtained their degree within the last three years will be considered. When calculating the three-year frame, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc.

The role requires experience in mineral and rock analysis and prior working knowledge of hydrothermally altered rocks. Additionally, experience with stable isotopes and/or prior knowledge of microbeam methods, such as SEM, EBSB, and possibly SIMS, is required. The ideal candidate should also demonstrate the ability to take initiative and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Excellent communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are required, along with documented expertise in writing scientific publications.

Desirable/meritorious

Knowledge of Swedish is meritorious. Experience in scientific outreach is also relevant, as the project's results may be presented and discussed in popular science journals or in the media. Experience in experimental petrology at high temperatures is an additional merit.

Application Procedure

Applications are welcome in English and should include a CV and a brief research report (approximately 2 pages) describing how the candidate's previous experiences and skills are relevant to the project's research area. The application should also include a list of publications in international journals with a peer-review system, copies of relevant certificates, and other relevant documents, as well as contact information for two referees.

About the Position

The position is fixed-term for 2 years according to the central collective agreement. The extent is full-time. Start date is June 1, 2025, or as agreed. Location: Uppsala.

For inquiries about the position, please contact: Professor Valentin Troll, valentin.troll@geo.uu.se (mailto:valentin.troll@geo.uu.se)

Welcome with your application by April 17, 2025, UFV-PA 2025/761.
