Postdoctoral Researcher in Ab Initio Electronic Structure Theory and Development of Simulation Methods with Coupled Spin-Lattice Dynamics

Do you want to work with state-of-the-art electronic structure methods and numerical simulations of magnetic phenomena using supercomputers as well as software development, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.

Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international standing. The ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important asset is all the individuals whose curiosity and commitment make Uppsala University one of the most exciting workplaces in the country. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees, and a turnover of approximately 7 billion SEK.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest, with nearly 400 employees, of which about 125 are doctoral students. The department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. Research is conducted in 10 research divisions and covers everything from the incomprehensibly small to the large in areas such as energy supply, climate development, new materials, and the universe. This entire spectrum is also reflected in the department's courses and educational programs. Around 2,500 students take courses at the undergraduate and advanced levels each year at the department. Job Responsibilities

The research in this project will involve numerical calculations and simulations of various materials on supercomputers, as well as analysis of results and presentation of these at international conferences and workshops, as well as writing manuscripts. Systems to be studied include transition metals and rare earth metals where the phenomena of interest are spin-lattice coupling effects and spin or charge density waves. The postdoctoral researcher will focus on obtaining detailed and accurate information on how the crystal structure affects the magnetic properties, and this information will be further used by other researchers in the group. The postdoctoral researcher will also work on implementing the generalized susceptibility formalism in the electronic structure software RSPt, and with its help, density wave instabilities can be predicted or analyzed for different systems. Extensive testing and numerical calculations for various materials will also be performed by the postdoctoral researcher.

Qualifications

PhD in physics or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in physics. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have obtained their degree within the last three years should be considered. In calculating the three-year time frame, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc.

Good communication skills in English are required.

Desirable/meritorious qualifications

Good knowledge of solid-state physics and electronic structure theory is meritorious, as well as experience with software development in Python and/or Fortran as programming languages. The ability to work effectively with supercomputer resources and to work in a research team is an asset.

About the Position

The position is temporary for two years according to central collective agreements. The extent is full-time. Start date is April 1 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala
