Do you want to work long-term, strategically, and close to operations on issues that affect how we develop mobility and the traffic system in symbiosis with our growing city? We are looking for a driven and motivated traffic strategist with experience in strategic development work.
Västerås is a strong growth engine for our region. With new establishments, improved rail traffic, a new travel center, and a growing population, high demands are placed on how we plan for an accessible, efficient, and sustainable transport system.
Your responsibilities
As a traffic strategist, you work with strategic traffic and mobility issues as an integrated part of urban development. You play a central role in developing how we plan for movement, accessibility, and sustainable travel throughout the municipality.
A central part of the initial assignment is to lead the work of developing and establishing the municipality's overarching steering documents regarding mobility. This means driving the process to ensure the plan is anchored and moving towards implementation.
You work closely with our politicians on challenging issues related to accessibility, traffic flow, and sustainable mobility. The role requires that you can analyze different perspectives, be clear in your recommendations, and simultaneously create understanding and momentum in complex decision-making processes. You have high initiative, enjoy driving projects and processes to completion, and are interested in representing infrastructure issues both internally and externally.
You participate in comprehensive planning and contribute to planning projects, sometimes even in the detailed planning phase. You conduct investigations, ranging from overarching analyses to more concrete traffic solutions. You contribute to how we work with different methods and processes in the area, monitor the external environment, keep up to date, and translate new knowledge into practical use for us.
You collaborate extensively with your closest colleagues within traffic, others in the department and administration, as well as other parts of the city, municipal companies, and external actors. You play a key role in translating political goals into actionable strategies and measures.
The role involves handling complex trade-offs between, for example, growth, traffic flow, sustainability, and the city's attractiveness. The holistic perspective must always be present.
Your qualifications
You have an academic education in traffic planning, urban planning, or equivalent, along with several years of experience working in urban planning. You have experience in development work and strategic planning with long-term perspectives. If you have previously produced steering documents regarding mobility, this is a positive.
You have worked in a politically governed organization, giving you understanding and experience in navigating based on political direction. As a person, you are quick to take initiative and achieve results, you have a broad perspective on issues, and remain motivated even when facing resistance and setbacks along the way.
We offer
An opportunity to influence how Västerås develops, with a special focus on sustainable transport and future mobility.
You operate in a context where urban development issues have clear strategic significance. You work together with competent and engaged colleagues in an organization characterized by cooperation, trust, and professionalism. Here you have the opportunity to develop in your role while contributing to sustainable and long-term societal development. The Urban Development Unit consists of approximately 15 people and belongs to the City Management Office.

Here you become part of something bigger! With warmth and respect, we show initiative in the big and the small. We live our values in our meetings with each other and those we serve. Every day, all year round, we ensure that Västerås functions. Together with your approx. 11,500 colleagues around the city, you have Sweden's most important job.
