Would you like to operate one of the brightest light sources in the world?
As part of Accelerator Operations, you will work as an Operator Assistant at the three MAX IV accelerators to ensure the beam conditions required for our beamlines and accelerator physicists.
The role of Operator Assistant consists exclusively of shift work, as operator service is required by the operations 24/7, seven days a week.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Operation of the MAX IV accelerators according to agreed weekly plans.
- Maintaining the nominal beam conditions as much as possible during delivery periods.
- Documenting problems and actions as they arise.
- Troubleshooting system failures.
- Handover to succeeding operators during shift changes.
- Acting as the on-site radiation protection responsible person when needed.
To succeed in the role, you must have the following qualifications:
- You have a Bachelor's degree in physics or an engineering discipline, and/or experience operating large, complex facilities.
- You have the ability to take initiative to solve problems before they arise and to develop solutions that make our accelerators run more smoothly.
- You enjoy programming and are comfortable working with Python.
- You thrive in shift work and are willing and able to work evenings, nights, and weekends.
- Excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
The following are considered meritorious:
- Previous experience operating accelerators at synchrotron facilities is a great advantage.

You see yourself as a careful and effective problem solver who naturally weighs risks and benefits of different solutions against each other to find the best way forward. MAX IV is a national research laboratory with Lund University as the host university. MAX IV provides state-of-the-art equipment for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. MAX IV, with its 16 beamlines, hosts up to 2,000 national and international researchers annually, who conduct groundbreaking experiments in materials and biosciences using the brilliant X-ray light.
