Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.

Your team

The Bloch beamline is designed for high-resolution ARPES and spin-ARPES to study the electronic structure of surfaces and 2D materials. The beamline provides VUV and soft X-ray with variable polarization to two endstations – ARPES and spin-ARPES – with a beam size down to 10 μm × 10 μm. The team consists of six members, including researchers, engineers, postdocs, and technicians, who actively drive several research and development projects.

Do you want to work at one of the world's most powerful light sources?

MAX IV is seeking a beamline scientist for the state-of-the-art ARPES beamline BLOCH to further develop the ARPES and spin-ARPES programs, including further developing instrumentation, expanding user groups, and conducting own scientific research.

Your main responsibilities will include

  • Ensuring stable and optimal daily operation of the beamline, including all instruments, software, and associated facilities, as well as preparing it for planned user experiments.
  • Providing support to users during the setup and execution of beamline experiments.
  • Ensuring that the technical infrastructure is always available and working on improvements that contribute to a user-friendly beamline.
  • Contributing to the continuous development and implementation of methods and beamline instrumentation.
  • Driving an individual or joint research program and securing external funding.
  • Playing an active role in the development of the beamline's research.
  • Conducting procurement to develop and maintain the technical infrastructure.
  • Evaluating incoming proposals for feasibility together with the beamline responsible.
  • Informing existing and potential new users about the beamline's current capacity and upgrade plans.
  • Creating and maintaining documentation of the beamline.
  • Having thorough knowledge of general and organizational safety rules and requirements, as well as instructing users and team members.
  • Supervising temporary staff (postdocs, PhD students, and master's students).

To succeed in the role, you must have the following qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or equivalent.
  • Documented professional research experience (post-PhD) in the field of synchrotron-based ARPES.
  • Documented professional research experience (post-PhD) in performing and interpreting micro-ARPES experiments and data.
  • Extensive experience in using and maintaining ultra-high vacuum equipment.
  • Experience in programming, e.g., in Python.
  • Proven ability to work independently.
  • Excellent English skills, good communication skills, and teamwork ability.
  • Experience in user support at synchrotron facilities or laboratories.

The following are considered merits

  • Documented experience with spin-ARPES.
  • Documented experience with operando (e.g., under voltage, load, or strain).
  • Documented experience with other synchrotron-based techniques.
