Project Description
This project aims to investigate the structure of nanoporous materials and their interaction with guest molecules in the material's pores, to create a deeper understanding of their chemical properties. Over the last decade, electron crystallographic methods such as three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and imaging techniques in aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy have developed into a toolbox that has pushed the boundaries of our understanding of their structures.
The properties of materials are determined by their structures at the atomic and molecular scale, and their selectivity as catalysts and adsorbents is largely governed by the structure and chemical functionality. In this project, we will use and develop advanced techniques based on transmission electron microscopy, such as three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with phase contrast, for structural analysis of nanoporous materials such as zeolites and MOFs at the atomic scale.
The postdoc will work in Associate Professor Tom Willhammar's group (www.willhammargroup.com (http://www.willhammargroup.com)).
Responsibilities
The project aims to carry out and develop protocols for structural investigations of nanoporous materials such as zeolites and MOFs at the atomic scale, including defects and guest molecules. For this purpose, the candidate will use electron crystallographic techniques, such as three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED/MicroED) and STEM images. The project involves developing protocols for the collection and analysis of electron microscopy data and their applications for investigating atomic structures of nanoporous materials.
Qualifications
To be eligible for employment as a postdoc, a completed doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree is required. The degree must be completed no later than when the employment decision is made.
Assessment Criteria
It is advantageous if the doctoral degree or equivalent was completed no more than three years before the last day of application. If there are special reasons, a previously completed degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust positions within trade unions, service in the total defence, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service relevant to the subject area.
During the appointment process, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific proficiency and research skills relevant to this project. We are looking for an excellent candidate with previous experience in structural characterization, including transmission electron microscopy and crystallography, as well as nanoporous materials. Knowledge of aberration-corrected (S)TEM, 3D electron diffraction, zeolites, or MOFs is advantageous. Demonstrable experience of advanced techniques in (S)TEM such as 4D STEM, integrated differential phase-contrast (iDPC), cryo-EM, and/or ptychography is desirable. Experience in scientific programming and/or familiarity with beam-sensitive samples is an asset. Given the international collaborations involved in this project, excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are important.
About the Position
The position is full-time and permanent, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date by agreement.
