Kemikum, with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest institutions at Stockholm University. Research at Kemikum covers all areas of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry, and organic chemistry. Research projects range from theory to experiment, from pure basic research to more applied projects often focusing on sustainable chemistry, as well as advanced analytical methods for chemicals and materials. Kemikum has a very well-developed research infrastructure with a wide range of equipment supported by qualified staff researchers.

Kemikum also hosts the undergraduate chemistry education and three master's programs: analytical chemistry, sustainable chemistry, and organic chemistry. Doctoral education is conducted within five areas: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry.

Project Description

The project aims to support the synthesis of new metal hydride materials through computational prediction of stable hydride phases under high pressure, as well as to evaluate their thermodynamic stability under extreme pressure and temperature conditions.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a researcher with experience in computational physics or computational chemistry to contribute to the completion of an experimental research project on the synthesis of new metal hydride materials at high pressures and temperatures. The main task is to apply crystal structure prediction methods to identify likely reaction products, which are then used as a basis for phase identification in in situ collected diffraction data. The responsibilities also include analyzing the dynamic and mechanical stability of the predicted hydride materials, as well as calculating the pressure- and temperature-dependence of their electronic structure and phonon structure.

Qualifications

A researcher is employed primarily for research and must have completed a PhD degree or hold a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD.

Selection Criteria

In the appointment, particular weight will be placed on scientific proficiency. The PhD degree should be in solid-state chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, or geo-/earth sciences.

The following merits and qualities will be given special consideration during the selection process:

  • Documented experience with crystal structure prediction (CSP) methods such as USPEX, AIRSS, CALYPSO.
  • Proven competence in ab initio methods aimed at simulating structure and properties under variable pressure-temperature conditions. This includes ab initio molecular dynamics simulations.
  • Experience with phonon calculations and electron–phonon coupling calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Documented scientific publication record (in relation to career stage).
  • Ability to collaborate and network.
  • Creativity, initiative, and independence.

About the Position

The position is full-time and fixed-term for a maximum of three months. Start date: 2026-09-15 or as agreed.
