Do you want to contribute to top-quality medical research?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) conducts research in epidemiology across a broad spectrum of areas. The department is among the largest in Europe in its field and is particularly strong in areas such as gastroenterology, psychiatry, cancer, and biostatistics.

Part of the department's success is due to our collaborative spirit, where a contributing factor is that researchers at the department share and co-finance common resources (such as IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is located on the Solna campus: http://ki.se/meb (http://ki.se/meb).

Our research group is now looking for a postdoc who wants to understand and prevent liver diseases. Our group consists of epidemiologists, clinicians, and database administrators with members from Sweden, Switzerland, China, and the USA.

Sweden is known for its national health registers. Using these registers as a starting point, Swedish researchers can conduct world-class research. Our research group deals with liver diseases but also with celiac disease, esophageal diseases, IBD, microscopic colitis, and colorectal cancer. Through the Swedish personal identity number, we link data from national health registers. However, these registers lack histopathological data/tissue data. By contacting all 28 pathology departments in the country, we have created a cohort of 2.6 million individuals (8.3 million biopsy reports) with tissue samples from the gastrointestinal tract (intestine, liver, pancreas, gallbladder). The cohort is known as ESPRESSO (Epidemiology Strengthened by histoPathology Reports in Sweden): https://www.dovepress.com/article/download/100535 (https://www.dovepress.com/article/download/100535)

Your Role

You will conduct research on liver diseases with a focus on PSC, MASLD, and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. The position requires statistical/mathematical competence and the ability to acquire necessary knowledge about intestinal diseases. Knowledge of epidemiology and register-based research is also a requirement.

For examples of our research, see here: https://ki.se/en/research/research-areas-centres-and-networks/research-groups/gastrointestinal-epidemiology-jonas-ludvigssons-research-group#tab-espresso (https://ki.se/en/research/research-areas-centres-and-networks/research-groups/gastrointestinal-epidemiology-jonas-ludvigssons-research-group#tab-espresso)

As a postdoc at MEB, there are good opportunities to participate in various forums related to research and your workplace. MEB is an inclusive workplace that encourages collaborations within the department and across research areas.

The position is advertised for 2 years with the possibility of extension.

Who are you?

To be employed as a postdoc, a completed doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made. It is meritorious if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years; if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Applicants must have:

  • Documented research experience after PhD
  • A PhD in epidemiology/biostatistics/hepatology-gastroenterology or equivalent
  • Proficiency in using R, SAS, Stata, SPSS, or similar statistical software.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both oral and written, as well as previous experience in writing and publishing research articles in English.

The applicant should have good teamwork skills but also the ability to work independently. Furthermore, the applicant should have good organizational skills, be able to handle multiple tasks in parallel successfully, and be able to describe previous examples of how they have solved unexpected and complex research problems. Experience with register-based research, preferably in gastroenterology/hepatology, and experience working with linked, routinely collected healthcare data is meritorious.

The applicant must have very strong analytical skills and be able to take responsibility for specific research projects. Additionally, the applicant should have the competence to contribute to the supervision of doctoral students, including necessary communication skills.

What do we offer?

In our group, we strive for individual supervision every week. The department organizes joint meetings and offers a wide range of courses and seminars every week in an international environment. Your supervisor, Ludvigsson, is one of KI's most distinguished researchers and also the scientific secretary of the Swedish Medical Association.

A creative, international, and inspiring environment filled with competence and curiosity. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Here, we conduct successful medical research and have the widest range of medical education in Sweden. At KI, you will meet researchers with different research focuses working together. It is this cross-border collaboration that contributes to KI's world-leading position in research. Several of the people you meet within healthcare are educated at KI. A close relationship with healthcare is important for creating education and research of the highest quality. As a university, Karolinska Institutet is also a government agency. This means that as an employee, you receive good benefits through our collective agreement.
