About the job
Environmental Technology Specialist for Quarries
As we transition towards a climate-neutral and more sustainable society, the demand for materials will continue. At the same time, quarrying operations often cause irreversible damage to the environment. Through participation in prioritized environmental assessments, EU work, and guidance, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) works to reduce the environmental impact from quarries. Issues such as species protection, ecological compensation, hydrogeological impact, discharges to water, post-treatment, handling of masses and waste, circularity, and energy efficiency are common areas where we engage and drive society in a more sustainable direction.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency needs to strengthen its team with a case officer with competence in environmental technology, hydrogeology, or ecology, and experience with environmental issues related to quarrying operations.
An important part of the work is to contribute to efficient environmental assessments, counteract new environmental problems related to new technology, and contribute to wise trade-offs between different interests. Collaboration within the agency and with other authorities and actors is a success factor in our work and something we place great importance on.
The position is located at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Protection Unit, which is part of the Division for Planning, Assessment, and Supervision. The unit is responsible for assessment, guidance, and regulation within environmentally hazardous operations such as mines, quarries, and metal and engineering industries. The unit also has overall responsibility for the Agency's work with assessment cases and system issues under the Environmental Code.
Your responsibilities
You will work with environmental issues related to your industry together with colleagues in the unit's quarry group. The assignment includes representing the public interest in court assessments, providing guidance to supervisory authorities and operators, and providing technical expert support to other parts of the agency. You may participate in various consultations, government assignments, and work with the development and implementation of EU law. Other subject matters may also become relevant depending on your competence and interests.
You will be part of an industry group with another environmental specialist and lawyers, and will also collaborate within the agency and with other actors. The unit's industry groups work very closely together on cases and issues that overlap. We place great importance on your ability to collaborate and contribute to a sense of teamwork.
Your qualifications
Requirements for employment:
- at least three years of natural science education at university or college level (for example within environmental technology, environmental science, geology, earth sciences, or hydrogeology) or alternatively a civil engineering education in a relevant area or equivalent competence,
- at least three years of current experience working with environmental issues related to quarries, mines, rock works (e.g., tunnel mining) or similar, at an authority or in the private sector,
- good knowledge of Swedish and English.
Merits:
- current experience of applying the Environmental Code or other Swedish environmental legislation,
- current experience of working with permit assessments, supervision, or self-control,
- current experience of hydrogeological modeling or issues regarding post-treatment.
Personal qualities:
- collaborate with colleagues and other actors with different perspectives and competences,
- see the big picture in complex contexts and assess which issues are important,
- drive the work forward, and plan, organize, and prioritize tasks in a structured way,
- communicate and explain decisions and stances in a pedagogical manner.
We place great importance on your current experience and personal qualities.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency wants to offer a flexible way of working through the possibility of remote work. We strive for an efficient operation and a sustainable working life.
