About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården)
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce reoffending – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation services, remand prisons, and client transport.
About the workplace
The Mariestad operational area includes the open prison Rödjan, the closed prison Johannesberg, and the Mariestad Remand Prison. Mariestad currently has approximately 400 employees distributed across various professional categories and competencies. However, with new constructions primarily in the Rödjan area, we are recruiting staff to man both Sweden's largest open prison and an upcoming new closed prison.
Job Description
As a prison officer, you will be part of a team where you have daily contact with clients. You can choose to work at a remand prison, a prison, or the transport department.
Working at a remand prison involves a focus on care and security and is a job with clear routines. Some people are held in pre-trial detention for long periods and only meet their lawyers and the staff at the remand prison. This places special demands on you as a prison officer.
Working in prison is varied: care, surveillance, search, and security work are mixed with release planning, as well as counseling and motivational work.
Working as a prison officer means you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans are capable of development.
You begin your employment at the workplace where you receive an introduction over three weeks. After a period of service, you are offered a place on the Prison and Probation Service's basic training, which is mandatory and lasts for 8 weeks. You receive salary during the entire training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments are conducted regarding your possibility of permanent employment.
Qualifications
Your personal qualities are important. As a prison officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need good teamwork skills and to be clear in your communication. You must be able to act physically when required.
For us, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute through your attitude to ensuring that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
We are looking for someone who has:
- A complete upper secondary education or alternatively other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
- Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not to be equated with employment
- Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
- Good computer skills
The following are also considered merits:
- Work experience from the prison and probation service, security work, social care, psychiatry, or care and support work
- Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
- Relevant language skills
