We are Varberg Municipality, the employer who sees the possibilities in you. Here you can make a difference, both for others and for yourself. We are driven by the idea of simplifying people's daily lives and realizing their dreams. We do this with the help of knowledge, innovative courage, and a forward-looking spirit. Welcome to contribute to the work towards our vision – to become the creative hub of the west coast.
The Pre-school and Primary School Administration is one of Varberg Municipality's largest administrations with nearly 2,200 employees. Within our areas of operation – pre-school, primary school, and child and student health services – we are here for children and students – together we shape the future.
We are looking for a Study and Career Counselor for Varberg Municipality. The position is 60–100 %, with at least 60 % based at the schools in Väröbacka and Bua.
About the schools
Buaskolan is located in Bua, near the sea, two miles north of the central town of Varberg. The school accommodates 350 students in grades F–6. The school offers a sports hall, football field, and good opportunities for recreation in the surrounding area.
Väröbackaskolan is located in the community of Väröbacka, just under 2 miles north of the central town of Varberg. From autumn 2026, the school will accommodate 650 students in grades F–9, following a major renovation and extension of the school. The school offers a varied outdoor environment as well as proximity to nature and sports facilities.
Responsibilities
In the role of study and career counselor, you are responsible for guiding the school's students from a comprehensive school (F9) perspective. Your overarching goal is to strengthen students' decision-making competence and provide them with good prerequisites for future study and career choices.
The work is varied and combines individual guidance through motivational conversations about future plans and study techniques with group guidance and teaching about the labor market, professions, and the education system.
You play a key role in the upper secondary school selection process for grades 8–9, where you inform about educational pathways, eligibility requirements, and handle the associated administration.
In your role, you will among other things:
- Plan, organize, and follow up on students' practical work life orientation (internships) in close collaboration with responsible teachers.
- Collaborate and communicate continuously with guardians, school nurses/student health services, other upper secondary schools, and the local business community.
- Actively participate in the school's student health team (EHT) and contribute the psychosocial and future-oriented perspective.
- Drive the school's strategic development in the area by revising and updating the local study and career counseling plan.
- Coordinate and follow up on support for students entitled to mother tongue instruction and study guidance.
- Counsel students in formulating clear goals, both short-term and long-term, and follow up on their development to create structure and direction in their studies.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who is confident in their profession and has a natural ability to build trust with students, colleagues, and guardians. You are communicative and have a good feel for how to adapt your message and conversation methods to different target groups and individual prerequisites.
Since the role involves significant personal responsibility for driving and administering the school's counseling processes, we place great emphasis on your independence and personal judgment.
To thrive and succeed in the assignment, you have:
- A university degree from the Study and Career Counseling Program (SYV degree).
- A structured approach to work and the ability to independently plan, schedule, and drive processes forward.
- Strong collaboration skills and experience in collaborating across professional boundaries as well as with external actors.
- Good digital competence and the ability to express yourself well in both speech and writing.
We offer
Salary: Monthly salary.
Employment type: Permanent position.
Duration: Permanent, start date: 2026-08-31. Start date according to agreement.
Since the position is 60–100 %, we will work to be flexible to be able to combine the position with other positions in or outside the municipality, of course within the framework of current laws and agreements. At least 60 % is included in the Väröbacka/Bua track.
Interviews will be scheduled in week 33.
To ensure your application works correctly in our recruitment system, we ask all applicants, including internal candidates, to use their private email address when applying.
Varberg Municipality welcomes diversity and sees differences as a strength. We hope that you, as an applicant, can contribute with your background and competence.
