Department of Women's Health
We are Akademiska Sjukhuset – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As a county hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we offer healthcare to two million people in Central Sweden. Here, something is always happening – a new life is born, a grandmother undergoes surgery, a colleague is hailed as a hero. Here, you will experience both tough challenges and fantastic events, within a strong community of colleagues. We welcome your application!
Our Operations
Obstetrics is a section within the Department of Women's Health, encompassing the delivery ward, the maternity ward (BB), and obstetric specialist clinics. Approximately 4,000 women give birth to us each year. We also have an induction clinic and a joint emergency clinic for gynecology and obstetrics (AGO). You as an employee are important to us, and together we create a good working environment. We value community, collaboration, and well-being. Our work to develop women's healthcare is ongoing, and our goal is to offer our patients the best possible care.
On our maternity ward (BB), we care for pregnant women with complicated pregnancies who require investigation and treatment. We also care for new families who have specific care needs after childbirth. All planned cesarean sections are admitted to the BB and cared for by midwives and assistant nurses pre- and post-operatively. We actively work with zero separation to promote bonding and breastfeeding. We are also responsible for the care of mildly premature children in close collaboration with the Neonatal Department. A large part of the care for healthy women and babies is handled by the midwives on "BB on the Go" (home-based BB care).
Our delivery ward has thirteen universal rooms, two of which are equipped with birthing pools. In 2026, a standalone but nearby small unit will be built, where patients with a healthy pregnancy, expected normal birth, and expected continued home care after birth can be admitted and give birth. On this unit, we will have access to birthing pools in all delivery rooms.
We strive to work with one midwife per birthing person in the active phase. We work to involve parents in the care to create a sense of participation during the care period. Your Role
Here, you will work in highly competent teams with midwives, nurses, assistant nurses, and doctors. We are always there for each other, and we have close collaboration with our colleagues. We focus on caring for our patients in the best possible way and with very high quality. Within obstetrics, you will develop your profession by working in several parts of the operation. Competence development and cross-professional knowledge exchange are part of the work. As we are a university hospital, we also have close collaboration with Uppsala University, and students are also part of the teamwork. Providing the patient, the woman, the child, and the family with the best possible care is seen as a matter of course. So is respect for people's different thoughts, cultures, opinions, and values.

Region Uppsala assigns all permanent staff for wartime duties based on the needs of the total defense. This entails no obligations for the individual employee in peacetime but is solely a planning measure.
