About Us

Astar is a leading provider of adult education. Our vision is to contribute to a strong and resilient labor market. We offer not just education and jobs – we create professional pride and joy in work.

Do you want to contribute to professional pride, joy in work, and hope for the future? At Astar, we educate adults – in an adult manner. We are proud of our mission and are now looking for you who share our values and want to make a difference.

Our Values

  • Professional Pride – We are knowledgeable, experienced, and work closely with the labor market. We use resources wisely and with respect.
  • Perseverance – We never give up – neither on our students nor on ourselves. We believe in development through responsibility and high expectations.
  • Joy in Work – We build good relationships, are curious, enthusiastic, and welcoming. Together, we create a workplace where people enjoy being.

About the Assignment

The assignment involves labor market training within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården) and is a replacement recruitment for a well-established program that has been running at Astar for a long time.

The education is an important part of the prison's operations and has, for many years, contributed to preparing participants for work in construction and civil engineering after release. Here, you step into a functioning structure with clear frameworks, while simultaneously having the opportunity to develop and refine the education.

At Astar, we believe in second chances. Through structure, clarity, and professional pride, you contribute to an important societal mission where education becomes a tool for rehabilitation, empowerment, and establishment on the labor market. Our work is characterized by high expectations, clear leadership in the classroom, and a commitment to each participant's development.

About the Role

In the role of teacher in woodwork, you are responsible for planning and conducting teaching in upper secondary courses within the Construction and Civil Engineering program according to GY25, for example:

  • Woodworking and Work Methods
  • (corresponds to practical tasks – sawing, planing, assembly, machinery)
  • Material Knowledge and Handling (wood and building materials)
  • (wood species, properties, storage, moisture content)
  • Work Environment, Safety, and Self-Control in Construction/Workshop
  • (machine safety, protective equipment, risk assessment)
  • Quality, Reading Drawings, and Dimensional Accuracy
  • (interpreting drawings, tolerances, work control)
  • Planning and Organization of Work in Construction Projects
  • (scheduling, work order, collaboration on site)
  • Service, Collaboration, and Professional Work Approach

You lead the teaching based on the Astar Model, where the teacher takes clear responsibility for structure, progression, and results. The teaching is teacher-led, occurs in clear steps, and is based on continuous follow-up of participants' understanding and development.

The focus is on combining practice and theory, developing professional identity, and creating a safe and structured learning environment. You actively work to motivate participants, set clear boundaries, and ensure study peace – while building relationships and hope for the future.

As part of the assignment, you also work with labor market connections and contribute to participants' path towards employment, in line with Astar's focus on employability and early contact with the industry.

The teaching takes place in close collaboration with the Swedish Prison and Probation Service and the Swedish Public Employment Service, placing high demands on structure, safety awareness, and professionalism. You are a key adult role model who contributes to order, motivation, and development.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are looking for you who have substantial professional experience in woodwork/carpentry – and who want to use your skills for something greater than production.

For the position, you must meet the main requirement, which means you have a vocational certificate as a woodworker and at least one (1) year of experience educating adults aged 16 and up within construction and civil engineering. Additionally, you must meet at least two of the three following requirements:

• Qualified (graduated) vocational teacher with a focus on construction and civil engineering

• At least one (1) year of professional experience as an employee in a company within the construction and civil engineering industry.

• At least one (1) year of experience working with people in penal or social institutions. Social institutions refer to education, treatment, rehabilitation, or similar for people with special needs.

We are looking for you who:

  • work in a structured manner and take full responsibility for your assignment
  • have high expectations and do not give up when it comes to participants' development
  • are clear, consistent, and professional in your leadership
  • build relationships and create joy in work in the learning environment

Your attitude is characterized by professional pride, responsibility, and a solution-focused work approach – in line with Astar's value base.

Since the education is conducted within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, you must be able to undergo and pass the security clearance check.
