Gothenburg University meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Clinical Sciences is one of six departments at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. At the department, research and education are conducted with a focus on human health and quality of life. We represent 16 different subject areas and are divided into four sections. Through a enriching collaboration with healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefit both care and research.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and coeliac disease are two common chronic gastrointestinal diseases. Research in this area holds many unanswered questions and has great potential for a long-term scientific career. The research group Gastrointestinal Epidemiology (https://www.gu.se/forskning/gastrointestinal-epidemiologi) conducts epidemiological research on IBD and coeliac disease through Scandinavian, national, and regional health registers. The aim is to better understand risk factors, prognosis, comorbidity, and treatment response. The research is led by Docent Karl Mårild and is conducted at the Department of Paediatrics.

We are now seeking 1–2 dedicated postdocs with experience in clinical epidemiology or biostatistics to participate in ongoing and upcoming projects focused on improving the understanding of risk stratification, prognostication, and clinical outcomes in IBD and coeliac disease. The project is carried out in close collaboration with other clinical researchers, both nationally and internationally.

Here, you will have the opportunity to work with unique databases and contribute to the development of research within IBD and coeliac disease, with the goal of improving patient care and treatment outcomes.

Subject

Clinical epidemiology within IBD and/or coeliac disease

Subject Description

Clinical epidemiological research on IBD and/or coeliac disease, mainly using national and regional health register data.

Responsibilities

In this position, you will use register-based data to answer clinical epidemiological questions within IBD and/or coeliac disease. This includes questions about how risk develops over time and which factors influence the risk of IBD or coeliac disease, such as medication use and comorbidity. The work will also involve predictive modelling and studies of prognosis in IBD and coeliac disease. The data is primarily register-based but may also include clinical variables.

You are expected to lead research studies largely independently. The work includes all parts of the research process, including formulating a statistical analysis plan (SAP), conducting statistical analyses of data, and manuscript writing. You may also participate in supervising doctoral students or supporting other group members' research, contribute to project management, grant applications, and scientific meetings within the project.

Qualifications

Eligible for employment as a postdoc is someone who has completed a PhD, an artistic PhD, or has a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.

Priority should be given to those who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who completed their degree earlier should also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust positions within trade unions, service in the total defence, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Assessment Criteria

A PhD in clinical medicine, epidemiology, or biostatistics is required for the position. Since the research concerns clinical questions, clinical experience in gastroenterology, paediatrics, or other relevant medical practice is meritorious. The applicant should have competence in causal inference, longitudinal methods, survival analysis, regression models, machine learning, or predictive modelling, as well as experience with statistical software such as R, SAS, or STATA. Experience in analysing Swedish health register data is meritorious.

The applicant must have very good knowledge of English in speech and writing, as well as documented experience in writing and publishing articles in "high-impact" journals, such as clinical/medical or clinical epidemiological journals. Knowledge of Swedish or another Nordic language is meritorious. Great importance is attached to the ability to independently design studies, conduct statistical analyses, and drive research projects. Clinical epidemiological research experience from Swedish health registers is seen as particularly meritorious.

We are looking for an independent and proactive person with good organizational skills and a structured working method. You have clinical experience to independently interpret data and design clinically relevant studies. You work efficiently, are flexible, and have good teamwork skills. Furthermore, you are communicative, receptive, and show curiosity and a willingness to develop and learn from other research areas. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

Employment

The employment is a fixed-term position for 2 years, 100% of full-time, located at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Division of Paediatrics. Start date by agreement.
