Description

The Department of Law is seeking a University Lecturer in Legal Science to teach primarily on the department's profession-oriented programs. We are looking for you with specific competence in constitutional law (Swedish constitutional law, the European Convention on Human Rights, and the constitutional aspects of EU law), EU law with a focus on the internal market, or international law and human rights, preferably with competence in several areas. Depending on your competence and current needs, the teaching may involve courses in the Law Programme and standalone courses, as well as in other legal areas where there may be a need. The position is a full-time temporary appointment starting on 2026-10-01 or as agreed, and extending at the latest until 2027-06-30.

Main Duties

The main duties consist of teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels and the associated administration. The department applies problem-based learning, which is based on students' active participation in seminars and realistic role-plays based on future professional life. In addition to leading seminars and role-plays, teaching consists of supervision and lectures. The duties also include keeping up with the subject area and general societal development that is significant for the work.

Qualifications

According to the employment regulations for teachers at Umeå University, the person eligible for appointment as a University Lecturer is one who has a degree at least at the master's level or has other professional skills that are significant with regard to the subject content of the appointment and the duties included in the appointment.

For this position, a law degree or equivalent and advanced theoretical or practical professional knowledge within the subject area are required. Competence to teach in Swedish and English is required for eligibility.

Assessment Criteria and Weighing Between Them

The primary assessment criterion for the current appointment is the degree of professional skills required for the position, followed by pedagogical skill, then administrative skill, and teamwork ability.

When assessing professional skills, particular emphasis is placed on advanced theoretical knowledge in the form of a doctoral thesis or research articles, or experience of practical legal practice and experience in the areas of the vacancy. Great weight is attached to both broad and in-depth professional skills in several of the areas of the vacancy, enabling teaching on several courses and at different levels.

Great weight is attached to pedagogical skill demonstrated through experience of teaching on a scientific basis or training professionals in the professions relevant to the department's teaching mission. Emphasis is also placed on the ability to express oneself orally and in writing in Swedish and English.

Weight is given to demonstrated administrative skill and demonstrated teamwork ability.

The Department of Law's teaching model is based on work in teaching teams, and experience of working in teaching teams or similar is therefore meritorious for the appointment. Since teaching is conducted in teaching teams where teachers with different competencies and experience participate, the appointment also places high demands on personal suitability and respect for the knowledge and experience of other people and professional categories. An important part of the work is to be part of the environment building at the department. Experience of assignments and experience of supporting more junior colleagues is therefore meritorious.

The closer details of which teaching is relevant for the position are planned together with the staffing manager, starting from the needs of the operations and your competencies and professional experience. The appointment also includes at least 10% competence development time.
