About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation, remand prisons, and client transport.

Job Description

As a prison officer, you are part of a team where you have daily contact with the client. You can choose to work in a remand prison, a prison, or the transport department.

Remand Prison: Working in a remand prison focuses on care and security and is a job with clear routines. Some people are held in pre-trial detention for long periods and only meet their lawyer and the staff at the remand prison. This places special demands on you as a prison officer.

Prison: Working in a prison is varied: care, supervision, search, and security work are mixed with release planning, as well as counseling and motivational work.

This vacancy is directed towards Avesta, but the workplace is in Sala.

Working as a prison officer means you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. You begin your employment at the workplace where you receive an introduction over three weeks. After a period of service, you are offered a place on the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic training, which is mandatory and lasts 8 weeks. You receive a salary throughout the training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments are conducted regarding your possibility of permanent employment.

Qualifications

Your personal qualities are important. As a prison officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need good teamwork skills and clear communication. You must be able to act physically when required.

It is important to us that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute through your attitude to ensuring that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
• Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not equivalent to employment
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
• Good computer skills

The following are also meritorious:

• Work experience from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, security work, social care, or psychiatry.
• Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
• Relevant language skills
