Gothenburg University meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.
Researchers in Type Theory for Mathematics and Computer Science
The Department of Data and Information Technology has an international character with approximately 300 employees from over 50 different countries. The department is an integrated unit with both the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principal institutions. The Department of Data and Information Technology is now seeking two researchers. The position is located within the Logic and Types research group, in the Computing Science division of the department, with the University of Gothenburg as the employer.
The project involves the study of dependent type theory extended with univalence, with applications in synthetic mathematics. Primary examples include synthetic algebraic geometry and synthetic Stone duality, but it may also involve other forms of synthetic mathematics, such as the study of higher categories. The project also covers the metatheory of dependent types, with the goal of designing better proof assistants.
Responsibilities
The two positions are full-time positions of 360 days each within the Logic and Types research group at the Department of Data and Information Technology. You are expected to conduct high-quality research and publish your results in leading international journals and conference proceedings. You should be able to work both independently and as part of a team, and communicate results both orally and in writing.
The positions may include teaching at the department, including supervision of bachelor's and master's theses. Teaching will constitute at most 20% of the working time. You may also participate as a co-supervisor for doctoral students.
Qualifications
Eligible for appointment as a researcher is someone who has completed a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, for example in computer science or mathematics, or who has a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. The doctoral degree must be completed no later than when the application period closes.
Employment
Form of employment: Fixed-term employment, 360 days
Scope: 100% of full-time
Location: Department of Data and Information Technology, Computing Science division, Logic and Types unit
Start date: 2026-10-01 or by agreement
Selection Process
You are expected to have a strong background, with an excellent publication list and experience working with dependent type theory and univalence, as well as good knowledge of the theoretical models within type theory. Knowledge of homotopy theory is also relevant as an assessment criterion. It is important that you also have substantial experience in the formalization of mathematics, e.g., in systems such as Lean, Coq, and Agda.
Experience in supervising doctoral students, master's students, and teaching in advanced courses will be considered an advantage.
The applicant must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. The ability to collaborate and take initiative are important qualities, as is thoroughness and interest in research.
In the evaluation of applicants, special emphasis will be placed on the ability to conduct research within the relevant research area. It is desirable that the candidate has already spent a few years as a postdoc.
Both Swedish and English are used in basic teaching, while English is the working language for research at the Department of Data and Information Technology. Therefore, both oral and written skills in English are mandatory.
