About SVA

Dangerous animal diseases can have serious consequences for animals, humans, the economy, and food security. The National Veterinary Institute (SVA) is an expert and emergency preparedness authority that contributes to good animal health and reduced disease transmission between animals and humans through diagnostics, research, and expert knowledge. SVA is part of the emergency preparedness sector for Food Supply and Drinking Water. Healthy animals – secure people.

The position is located at the Department of Chemistry, Environment and Feed Safety (KMF), which consists of two sections with a total of approximately 30 employees with various natural science competencies. Quality assurance is an important part of our operations, and we operate under both accreditation according to ISO 17025 and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). In addition to routine analytical activities, we engage in method development, research, and knowledge dissemination.

The Section for Environment and Feed Safety (SMF) has in-depth knowledge of chemical and microbiological risks in feed and water. We work with research and knowledge building, questions regarding feed legislation at the EU and national levels, and provide advice, conduct risk assessments, and perform consulting services in the feed industry. Additionally, SMF works on disease transmission in the environment, the impact of climate change, and climate adaptation of animal husbandry.

Your future responsibilities

The employment is part of a project funded by the MP Seydlitz Foundations called "Gigacow farms as sentinels for monitoring infectious diseases." The purpose of the project is to investigate whether signals from data collected on dairy farms connected to SLU's Gigacow infrastructure can be used to provide early warnings of infectious diseases.

As a researcher in this project, you will work on developing and adapting signal processing methods and mathematical models to interpret data from dairy cow herds. The work will include time series analysis, sensor fusion, spectral analysis, filtering, predictive modeling, and integration of data from multiple technical systems. The aim is to create better decision support for identifying disease outbreaks and other events affecting animal welfare.

Qualifications

To succeed in the role, you need to have:

  • a bachelor's and doctoral education in a relevant field, such as physics, technical physics, applied mathematics, signal processing, control engineering, or related data-intensive areas.
