Do you want to work on implementing deep learning models for ECG data and its use in healthcare, supported by competent colleagues in a leading international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee engagement and offers secure, advantageous working conditions? You are welcome to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.
Uppsala University has a long tradition of successful research – among its alumni are 16 Nobel laureates, most recently Svante Pääbo. The university is unique in combining IT with broader research, from life sciences to humanities, and this collaboration is currently facilitated by AI4Research and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics.
The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in both research and education at all levels. Today, we are Uppsala University's third largest department with over 350 employees, including 120 faculty members and 120 doctoral students. Approximately 5,000 undergraduate students study one or more courses at the department each year. More information about us can be found on the Department of Information Technology's website.
At the Division of Systems and Control, we develop both theory and concrete tools to design systems that learn, reason, and act in the real world based on a seamless combination of data, mathematical models, and algorithms. Our research integrates expertise from machine learning, optimization, control theory, and applied mathematics, spanning various application areas such as medicine, energy systems, biomedical systems, neuroscience, and security.
In our ongoing research on using AI to interpret ECG records, we have reached a level of performance where we see opportunities to develop prototypes to further test this within the framework of tomorrow's healthcare systems. This 1-year project aims to enable our research to be translated into clinical use.
Respons
Create a concrete understanding of the nuances in user needs in a clinical situation related to ECG readings. Compile and verify industrial prototypes. This involves evaluating and adapting (training) AI models based on deep learning. Develop the technical side of the prototype and transform research code into an industrial prototype, i.e., a well-maintained software package. New development of methods related to AI analysis of ECG data. Write scientific articles and technical documentation.
Qualifications
Eligible for the position is someone who has:
- A PhD in machine learning, control engineering, signal processing, or a similar field.
- Experience in AI-related software and product development.
- General theoretical knowledge and practical experience in deep learning generally, and with ECG data specifically.
- Research experience and a good understanding of dynamic systems.
- Research experience and solid knowledge in probabilistic modeling.
- Good communication skills.
- Experience working with medical researchers.
- Fluent English in speech and writing.
We are looking for candidates with:
- A strong interest in implementing and developing new methods and models for deep learning in connection with ECG data.
- Personal qualities, such as a high level of creativity, precision, and/or a structured approach to problem-solving, are crucial.
Application
The application should include:
- A cover letter (max 2 pages) where you briefly explain why you are applying for this position. The cover letter must include the heading "Suitability for this position" containing a self-assessment of why you would be the right candidate for this role.
- A curriculum vitae (CV).
- Diplomas and transcripts (translated into English or Swedish).
- Publications and other relevant documents.
- Contact information for two references (name, email, and phone number).
About the Position
The employment is fixed-term for 12 months. The position is full-time. Start date: August 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
Information about the position is provided by: Professor Thomas Schön, email: [email protected].
