Project Description

PhD Subject: Information and Communication Technology

We are now seeking PhD students for the Network Security Group within EECS/CLS. We are looking for motivated individuals interested in research and doctoral education in security and privacy. The position involves activities leading to independent research resulting in peer-reviewed publications. The research areas may relate to any of the areas the NSS group works on (https://www.eecs.kth.se/nss (https://www.eecs.kth.se/nss)).

The Network Security Group designs and builds reliable network systems. Our research covers a wide spectrum of security, privacy, and networking problems. Several of our results have received significant attention from the research community. Our teaching efforts lead to a new course area in security that we are introducing at KTH. Our work combines theoretical and experimental methods.

Supervision: Professor Panagiotis 'Panos' Papadimitratos is proposed to supervise the PhD student. The decision is made upon admission.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • completed an advanced level degree, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
  • acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

To succeed in your PhD studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In selecting applicants, the ability to:

  • independently drive your work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional attitude and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.
  • be able to demonstrate documented experience in several of the following areas: data security, privacy-preserving or privacy-enhancing technology, mobile computing, networks, internet security, wireless communication, distributed algorithms and systems, programming languages, performance analysis, operating systems, simulation techniques and tools, software engineering, systems and network programming, applied cryptography, optimization, information theory.

Applicants with strong experimental, systems, or theoretical profiles and research interests in all aspects of security and privacy are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have an interest in several of the following areas: design, analysis, verification, implementation, or empirical evaluation of secure network systems. Of primary interest is security and resilience in positioning/localization, including global navigation satellite systems.

Otherwise, candidates need to show readiness and willingness to contribute to our research and to work in an international research team.

After meeting the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as PhD students. The total employment period must not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD student is valid for at most one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for at most two years at a time.

  • Representative publications or technical reports. For longer documents, please attach a summary (abstract) and a web link to the full text.
  • The candidate must be ready to provide at least two references who can confirm the candidate's academic merits.

The application must be received by KTH no later than the last day of the application period at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/Central European Summer Time).
