Doctoral Subject: Applied Physics

The project will be carried out within the Research Group for Experimental Biomolecular Physics at the Department of Applied Physics. The group's research focus is on fluorescence-based ultra-sensitive and super-high-resolution techniques for biomolecular and cellular studies. The research includes both method development and applications within fundamental biophysics as well as towards clinical applications. Within this framework, the goal of this project is to develop a new method based on fluorescence blinking to monitor biomedically relevant states in cells. The project is highly interdisciplinary, spanning both experimental work (optics/photonics, spectroscopy/imaging, chemistry, cell and molecular biology) and theoretical work (modeling, data management/programming). The project will also include collaborations with biomedical research groups.

Supervision: Professor Jerker Widengren is proposed as the main supervisor. Final decision is made upon admission.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a degree at an advanced level, or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or
• acquired in other ways, within or outside the country, knowledge that is substantially equivalent.

In addition, the applicant should have:

• An MSc degree in Technical Physics, Biomedical Physics, or equivalent
• Practical experience with advanced fluorescence spectroscopy/imaging
• Good programming skills (e.g., Python, Matlab)
• Strong motivation and interest in biomolecular physics and interdisciplinary research

Furthermore, there is a mandatory requirement for English proficiency equivalent to English B/6.

Information about Admission and Employment

Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies to be concluded with a Licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over two years.
