About the project

TexAI is an interdisciplinary research project at the University of Borås aimed at developing and implementing artificial intelligence for a more sustainable, circular, and data-driven textile and fashion industry. The project integrates expertise in textile technology, design, materials science, and information technology to address key challenges in production, recycling, and value chain optimization. The research focuses on applied AI in areas such as sensor data analysis, time-series modeling, automation, and decision support, with strong links to industrial applications. TexAI is conducted in close collaboration with a broad network of industrial partners and aims to create concrete solutions that can contribute to reduced textile waste, more efficient resource use, and increased competitiveness in the textile sector.

The position is attached to the TexAI project and is designed to actively contribute to the project's goal of strengthening the textile field within and outside academia using applied AI for the analysis of sensor data and time series in textile production, with the aim of developing intelligent solutions for process optimization, automation, and quality control in industrial environments.

Your responsibilities

Your research is related to the TexAI project. The duties include:

  • AI support in the process chain: Develop and apply image analysis, data process analysis, and sensor technology for textile production, as well as use machine learning for process optimization and performance prediction from fiber to finished product. This includes functional treatment of textile materials and AI-based quality assessment with feedback to production before defects occur.
  • Data collection and management in university lab environments: Establish high-quality datasets for fiber, yarn, and woven/knit parameters as a basis for AI/ML models and digital prototype development. Collaborate with internal labs, research groups, and industrial partners for needs-driven research, testbeds, and implementation in the Swedish textile industry.
  • Publication and research funding: Publish in international journals and apply for external funding for projects and equipment (national and EU).
  • Teaching and administration: The position includes up to 20% teaching and administration, including course development, laboratory work, and supervision of theses.
  • Training initiatives in digitalization/AI: Develop interactive learning resources and teach responsible use of AI (including ethics) for students, alumni, and professionals.
  • Participation in doctoral education: Participate in the supervision of doctoral students where applicable and contribute to the development of the research environment.

You will work under the supervision of Docent Junchun Yu and Project Leader Professor Nawar Kadi. Your nearest manager is Proprefect at the Department of Textile Technology, Anders Persson.

Your qualifications

We are looking for you who have a PhD in textile technology, materials science, information technology, or a closely related field, as well as documented experience in data collection and process processing. The PhD should normally have been awarded no more than three years before the last application date. Even those who have completed their degree earlier may be considered if there are special reasons.

Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, trust positions within trade unions, or other similar circumstances.

You must also have experience in modeling, machine learning, or AI with textile applications, as well as documented research experience and publications.

For the position, very good collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills are required. You also need to have analytical ability, a structured work approach, initiative, and the ability to prioritize. A clear commitment to sustainability and an understanding of the environmental impact associated with textile production are also prerequisites. Furthermore, very good proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required.

Meritorious:

  • Teaching experience in both theory and laboratories.
  • In-depth knowledge of textile processes.
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish.

Your employment

Employment according to the Agreement on Fixed-term Employment as a Postdoc, for an indefinite period, but for a period of at least two and at most three years. The employment period corresponds to two years with the possibility of extension for an additional year.

A prerequisite for the application of this agreement is that the applicant has not previously been employed as a postdoc under this agreement for more than one year within the same or a closely related subject area with the same employer.
