The Faculty of Arts consists of the departments HDK-Valand – University of Gothenburg School of Arts, Crafts and Design and the School of Music and Theatre. Job Responsibilities

The doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree.

As part of your PhD employment, you may have departmental duties amounting to a maximum of 20% of full-time work, distributed over the entire period of study. This will, in that case, result in a corresponding extension of the study period. Departmental duties usually involve teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels, but may also include research and administration.

PhD studies are conducted through employment, and you are required to be at the workplace during normal working hours, unless otherwise agreed in advance with the employer or due to illness. Admission and Employment

After you have been admitted to the doctoral education, you will receive a PhD employment at Göteborgs University.

The first employment as a PhD student may last for a maximum of one year and may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

A PhD student may be employed for a maximum of eight years, but the total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years.

Start date: January 18, 2027.

The doctoral education at HDK-Valand requires physical presence in Gothenburg to complete the studies.

If the admitted candidate needs a residence permit to study in Sweden, HDK-Valand has the right to revoke the admission decision if the admitted candidate cannot present a valid residence permit by the start date of the studies.

Employment

After you have been admitted to doctoral education, you will receive a PhD employment at Göteborgs University.

The university applies a local agreement on salary setting for PhD students. The starting salary for PhD students at the Faculty of Arts is currently 32,300 SEK/month.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the application is complete according to the advertisement and that the university receives it by the last day of application.
