The Department of Economics and Statistics belongs to the Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law at Gothenburg University, and the department has approximately 100 employees from many different countries. Teaching is conducted in economics and statistics and currently has approximately 800 students registered for the department's courses and programs. A diversity of researchers is gathered at the department, several of whom are internationally renowned economists. The strongest research areas are labor economics, behavioral economics, development economics, environmental economics, and financial economics. Job Description
You will work as a research assistant for Professor Randi Hjalmarsson (Gothenburg University) and Professor Matthew Lindquist (Stockholm University), providing support for their research agenda funded by the European Research Council (ERC) on how to break the cycle of inequality and crime. The research assistant will primarily work on projects concerning the labor market for individuals with a criminal background in Sweden.
This is an excellent opportunity for you who are considering pursuing a PhD in economics to:
- Gain data skills and an overview of the research process, from idea concept to data collection and cleaning, to analysis and report writing.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Research on institutional details in the criminal justice system and the labor market in Sweden and other countries.
- Cleaning and handling of Swedish administrative datasets.
- Basic data analysis.
- Assisting in the preparation of survey experiments.
- Conducting literature searches and writing reviews.
Qualifications
We look for applicants who have a master's degree (or are studying towards one) in a field relevant to the position, such as data science, economics, statistics, etc.
The ideal candidate has very good knowledge of Swedish to work with Swedish institutions and high-quality data. However, candidates with strong merits in other areas may also be considered even if they are not fully fluent in Swedish.
Very good knowledge of English, experience working with data, and knowledge of Stata as well as preferably R or Python are valued. Previous experience as a research assistant and a genuine interest in criminal policy or related areas such as economic inequality and labor economics are considered advantageous.
Employment
The employment is a fixed-term special fixed-term appointment for 11 months with a scope of 100%, located at the Department of Economics and Statistics. The position starts on September 1st or as agreed.
The employment contract will be with Gothenburg University, but the position may be located either at the Department of Economics at Gothenburg University or at the Institute for Social Research (SOFI) at Stockholm University. The applicant must be able to work on-site at least part of the time.
