Welcome to Formas, a research council for sustainable development! We fund research and innovation that can contribute to achieving the UN's global sustainability goals and provide knowledge bases to facilitate Sweden's achievement of environmental targets. We focus heavily on collaboration with researchers and various societal actors, both in Sweden and internationally.

At Formas, you will have the opportunity to work in a knowledge-intensive organization driven by the mission to contribute to sustainable development.

About the Unit

The newly established Unit for Resilient Ecosystems is part of the Department for Climate and Natural Environment. The unit is responsible for the national research programme on oceans and water, the innovation programme WaterWise Societies, as well as Formas international collaborations on biodiversity, blue economy, and water resource management, along with work related to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Through systematic research syntheses, the unit contributes to scientific decision-making support for authorities, municipalities, and other actors developing and managing instruments, measures, and guidelines in the environmental field. Within its area of responsibility and broadly across the agency, the unit actively works on developing our funding processes, strategic communication regarding Formas initiatives, and the utilization and impact of the research and innovation funded by the agency. We maintain ongoing contact with a wide range of stakeholders, including academia, industry, and sectoral authorities in these fields.

You will be part of a team responsible for the development and implementation of the national research programme on oceans and water, a programme aimed at creating conditions for a strategic and long-term approach with a holistic perspective on water. The programme is intended to facilitate cooperation between researchers and other societal actors, as well as to gather funders within the water sector. You will also be responsible for Formas role as host for the national committee for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Formas portfolio in the marine and water sector includes several different programmes and initiatives. The work therefore also involves managing and creating synergies between them, which includes the connections between the national research programme on oceans and water, the innovation initiative Water Wise Societies, and the two European partnerships Water 4 All and Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP).

About the Role

In the role of Research Secretary, you will participate in the call activities for research and innovation grants, contribute to environmental scanning as well as analysis and follow-up of initiatives within the marine and water sector.

The duties also include representing the agency in collaboration with other authorities, industry organizations, and stakeholders in the field, as well as planning and carrying out outward-facing activities. Analysts and communicators also work at the unit, and participation in analytical assignments may occur.

Who are you?

As a person, you are structured, responsible, non-hierarchical, and have high integrity. You have good collaboration skills and can see the big picture, plan, and prioritize. You are skilled at driving your work forward independently and taking initiative. You work both independently and in groups and have a good ability to collaborate constructively.

Requirements for the position:

  • Advanced academic degree in a field relevant to the employment
  • At least five years of professional experience working in a knowledge organization and with research and innovation issues
  • Documented knowledge of marine and water issues
  • An established network within issues concerning oceans and water
  • Very good communication skills and the ability to express yourself simply and clearly in speech and writing in Swedish and English

Merits for the position:

  • Doctoral education in a field relevant to the position (or equivalent qualifications acquired in other ways)
  • Experience of collaboration processes between the public sector, academia, business, and surrounding society
  • Experience working with the funding of research and innovation issues
  • Experience from international contexts and EU collaborations

We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
