10 positions available – Become a Retention Firefighter (RIB) in Skellefteå Municipality

Are you ready to become a key figure in society's safety? We are looking for you who want to combine your civilian job with a meaningful assignment – to be a Retention Firefighter (RIB). As an RIB firefighter, you are an important part of the rescue service and a source of security for the residents in your area. You get the opportunity to make a real difference, while developing both physically and mentally.

Today, approximately 180 people work as firefighters at our RIB stations (Rescue Personnel in Retention) around the municipality. But we need to be more – women and men with different backgrounds. We are currently looking for reinforcements for our RIB stations in:

Kåge, Fällfors, Byske, Jörn, Boliden, Skelleftehamn, Bureå, Lövånger, Burträsk, and Bygdsiljum.

Your Role

As a Retention Firefighter, you are employed by the Rescue Service in Skellefteå Municipality. You participate in emergency responses, exercises, and training – and receive compensation for both deployment time and retention periods. An RIB unit has an average of 40–50 alarms per year, where each incident takes approximately one hour.

The retention schedule can vary depending on your life situation – full-week retention is desirable, but there are also opportunities for evening, night, or day retention. You become part of a local team that works closely together and plays a vital role in society's safety efforts.

Your Competence and Experience

To become an RIB firefighter, you need to:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Hold a B driver's license
• Have good physical fitness and be in good health
• Have good communicative skills in Swedish, both spoken and written
• Live or work such that you can reach the fire station within 5 minutes
• Pass our recruitment tests: interview, swimming and physical test, and medical examination
• Have the approval of your employer and family

You should also enjoy working with people and have a calm and solution-focused approach in high-pressure situations.

The training follows the MCF's (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) program and consists of several steps, including smoke diving and a C driver's license. The goal is for you to complete the entire training package within two years. The Rescue Service in Skellefteå follows the MCF's training program. Here are the steps in brief:

1. You have passed and been approved in the recruitment's requirements and tests.
2. A 2-week training course at MCF, where self-study is mixed with distance and place-bound studies (Course 1).
3. A 2-week training course in Skellefteå, which includes among other things smoke diving.
4. After reaching this stage in the training, you can begin to join a retention group in your home area and respond to alarms.
5. The training is not yet complete; you need to complement it with a 3-week training course at one of MCF's training locations, with the nearest ones being in Luleå and Sundsvall (Course 2).

An individual training plan is set for each person. For practical reasons, most people are accompanied through the entire training period. Obtaining a C driver's license (truck license) is also included in the training.

The Rescue Service is part of the Public Works Administration in Skellefteå Municipality. We have eleven fire stations and a rescue corps spread across the municipality. The largest station is located in central Skellefteå, where our full-time staff works.
