Become an economist where your contribution makes a difference

The Department of Neuroscience studies various aspects of the nervous system's function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. The research projects cover a broad spectrum of studies at the molecular and cellular levels, nerve cell networks, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The department also provides education in anatomy, histology, and neuroscience within several degree programs at Karolinska Institutet.

Neuroscience has approximately 250 employees distributed among some 40 research groups, active in the Biomedicum research building on the Solna campus, which houses up to 1,500 employees. Here, our administrative unit for HR, finance, and graduate studies works together with four other administrative units in a shared block with an open office layout and space for up to 50 colleagues.

Do you want to take the next step in your career in finance, work close to world-leading research, and see how your work makes a difference? Then you are welcome to read on.

Your role

You will be one of two people in the department's finance function. You will work independently and in close collaboration with the department's finance manager, who has overall responsibility for accounts, budget, and reporting. Your task is to be the close contact person for research groups and support them in ongoing project reporting, follow-up, and analysis.

Examples of duties:

  • Budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and follow-up for research groups
  • Reporting and quarterly reconciliations with research group leaders
  • Accounting and reporting of research grants
  • Requisition of funds
  • Contract accounting, entry, and follow-up of contracts
  • Ongoing handling of customer and supplier invoices
  • Handling of fixed asset register, activation, and disposal
  • Filing of cases and projects
  • Shared mailbox for finance
  • Monthly reconciliations and closing of accounts
  • Travel accounts and expenses
  • Support the finance manager as needed

Who are you?

We are looking for you who have:

  • An academic degree in business administration, preferably with a focus on accounting, or other education deemed equivalent
  • 2-3 years of experience in independent financial work
  • Basic knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping
  • Good knowledge of Excel and other MS Office programs, as well as experience learning new administrative systems
  • Very good ability to communicate in Swedish and English, both orally and in writing

It is meritorious if you also have:

  • Experience from working in a public sector organization, preferably from a university or higher education institution
  • Experience of project reporting in a research- or project-intensive environment
  • Experience with financial systems such as Unit4 (UBW/Agresso), Qlikview (VIS), or Primula.
  • Experience of an international working environment

We place great emphasis on personal suitability. You need to be meticulous, analytical, and responsible, as well as having very good collaboration skills. Furthermore, it is important that you are communicative and service-oriented, as the work involves a lot of direct contact with the department's researchers. Interest in development, digitalization, and efficiency is also a central part.

Our team and environment

You will become part of a happy and positive team of five people who work closely together in their daily work to support the department's research and education. The team consists of two HR staff, two economists, one of whom will be you, and an administrative manager. You will sit in Biomedicum together with five departments in a shared open block.
