Swedish Defence Music (Försvarsmusiken) is the Swedish Armed Forces' function for military music. In 2026, Swedish Defence Music will celebrate its 500th anniversary and has played a significant role in the Swedish Armed Forces and Swedish musical life throughout the centuries.
The Swedish Armed Forces have 28 military bands, consisting of the permanent bands of Swedish Defence Music: the Army Band, the Life Guard Dragoon Band, the Navy Band, and the 25 bands of the Home Guard combat force. The War Organisation of the Defence Artillery is also part of Swedish Defence Music. The contract bands, the Air Force Band and the Gotland Band, are continuously engaged for musical operations.
Every year, Swedish Defence Music carries out over 1,300 musical operations through participation in state ceremonies, unit performances, public concerts, and tours – both nationally and internationally, primarily within the alliance.
The Army Band
The Army Band is a band for parade and ceremonial activities as well as a symphonic wind orchestra for concert activities in various genres with varying focus. The band, consisting of 53 musicians, is located in Häggvik, Sollentuna. Cooperation takes place with the other bands.
Main Duties
- Marching performance in ceremonies, parades, and figure displays
- Participate in concerts with orchestra and ensembles
- Participate in record recordings and live broadcasts
Other duties may include tasks that promote the band's activities, such as participating in working and project groups within Swedish Defence Music.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed at several locations with irregular working hours and in varying conditions and environments, both indoors and outdoors, in Sweden and abroad.
- Performances are conducted in uniform.
Qualifications
- Higher education in music or equivalent competence.
- Excellent physical condition for marching performance.
Merits
- Completed conscription/basic military training.
- Class B driver's license.

Employment
This advertisement concerns a permanent position with a six-month probation period. Start date according to agreement.
Individual salary setting applies. Applicants must be Swedish citizens. Approved security clearance with registry check is a requirement for employment.
Employees within the Swedish Armed Forces are offered three hours of physical training per week during working hours. Good training facilities are available in and around the band's premises in Sollentuna.
